Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA?

Compared to Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and many other ethnic restaurants, Polish restaurants are relatively unknown. Why is this?

Kielbasa is one of the favored sausages but you don't see it in restaurants so much, mostly at grocery stores. One reason you don't see so many Polish restaurants is Poles do not come here and open that many. Most the Mexicans and Asian restaurants are opened by Latinos and immigrants from Asia.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Americans generally don't like Polish cuisine compared to other ethnic food?

There are a few Polish restaurants in my state and they are rarely crowded. They'll be lucky if they manage to have three tables occupied at the same time. One of the restaurants actually went out of business a few years ago.

Btw have you ever heard of an English restaurant or Scottish?

It certainly does get overrated by Poles though. The most annoying thing is when Poles act like pierogis are the most tasteful thing in the world.

Americans will eat any kind of food. Even Sushi. It's just that Poles do not come to America and open Polish restaurants, not at the rate Vietnamese open Chinese restaurants, so it might appear Polish cuisine isn't popular but it is. Everyone loves to make Jambalaya with Kielbasa? Kielbasa is part of American culture.

Maybe not the most tasteful in the world but tasteful. Funny coincidance... I've just ate a few pierogis with blueberry filling. Yummy :)

That's a bad example. Sushi is glorious. Sure, there are types of sushi that are gross but in general everyone loves sushi if they give it a chance.

I'm not sure I'd describe Poland as an ethnic group, but what would you describe as uniquely Polish?


Normally I wouldn't agree with 'Rebirth' but in this case he is right. Polish cuisine is notespecially good. Home-cooked is OK but nothing special, in restaurants in Poland it is usually bad.

Except for Italian, I don't think any of the European country's cuisines are that common in small towns in the US.

Even kielbasa is overrated though. If I'm having a barbecue, I usually prefer cooking bratwursts or various Italian sausages.

FYI, all supermarket kielbasa has to do with real kielbasa is the color and shape. I wouldn't feed the supermarket stuff to a dog.

The place on ul. Francuska serves it with overpriced fries. Frozen ones, fried and refried until transparent. :-(

are you sure? Americans don't like fancy food, they stick to bbq, burgers and Tex-Mex...
all cuisines are "americanized" to fit an american taste and sell... so nothing original here...

tell him that kie³basa means no more than sausage and it's not a name for any particular product (unless in America). There is whole range of different kind of kie³basa (sausages) and not every is best for bbq.

In Chicago where there are millions of Poles, the Polish restaurants are thriving. In other states, where there are many Germans, the German restaurants are popular. Not every black person, Chinese, Italian, Asian, Mexican or Jewish likes Polish food. Some is tasty, some isn't ( like czarnina, flaki ) and all those immigrants that sit in America prefer foods from their home country. Why do some Poles think that Polish food is the best in the world? Much of it is unhealthy and greasy, such as the greasy kielbasa or pierogi fried on bacon bits. Not everybody enjoys heartburn. The trend in America now is to eat healthy foods.

Ever hear of Michigan's Little Bavaria aka Frankenmuth? I've been there many times to many different restaurants and I can confirm that everything I've tried on the menus is better than the garbage I've been served at Polish restaurants.

it's not bad... American market just isn't a good place for it... because if you "Americanize" Polish food, it won't be Polish anymore...
