It's not as if our discussion here will change anything out there....

It'll fill a good block of time, and hopefully get a certain helmetless feller reading a bit about Afghanistan and global politics :)

just some of them

Thnks!
And of those few non-terrorist Muslims, who would you guess majority of them are: peace-loving, religious people, or pro-western, 'bad' muslims?

Afghanistan has always had an interesting history, very deeply intertwined with the British empire (The great game, etc). A bit of info on the tribal history, and what it means now.

It really starts to get relevant with the Shahs. There was already growing animosity with Pakistan and cozying up to the Soviets at that time. Then there was a coup, and then another one, and then there was a commie government in place which started getting very close to the Soviets, and pissing off quite a few people in Afghanistan. Queue Soviet invasion, resistance by different factions Massoud and the US/Pakistani backed "resistance fighters" (which would later make up the core of the Taliban), collaboration by others the Uzbeks under Dostum...then it gets interesting.

The civil wars start. Pakistan backed their horse, the Taliban, with the ISI. Taliban claims to be the legitimate government, Massoud and Dostum make some gains, some arabs fly planes into buildings and NATO comes into play.

Now, the neat thing here, old loyalties die hard. The ISI is still backing the Taliban...And we used to support Pakistan as a bulwark against the Soviets, and now we're backing their government so that their country (and nukes!) doesn't fall to the Islamists in the North.

That's the corner that we've f*cked ourselves into.

There's a good book called "Descent into Chaos" which ties things together quite nicely. It also does a good job explaining why the Karzai government has no chance to bring stability in its current form.

I can send you a list of books if you want.

One thing for sure about Afghanistan it lead the Soviets to distraction and is leading United States to distraction or self implosion
and why other countries are supporting this madness or why Poland has troops in there anyone knows?
Now the Pakistan Taliban has close border crossing so no supply gets to troops and United states is escalating the drone attacks in Pakistan
This is f*** madness this is not war on terror this is war of terror on indigenes population.
At home they are passing more laws to take citizens rights away in name of war on terror, they are terrorizing own population.
This is not going to end well for millions of people around world.

C.Asia

The Great Game - Pete Hopkirk (really good, not contemporary, but really good)

AF

Afghanistan: A Military History - Stephen Tanner
Descent into Chaos - Ahmed Rashid (he's a bit, mmm, creative at times, but his historical info is great)
Jihad - Ahmed Rashid

PK

The Duel - Tariq Ali (a bit light biased towards certain Pakistani politicians, but all in all, a good read about the history of Pakistani Politics)
Pakistan - Husain Haqqani (some good info recent US/Pakistani military and political relations)
The Afghanistan-Pakistan Theater - touches on a couple of different topics, not that in depth, and is a bit western view oriented, but still a decent read

If any of them interest you, but are out of print, just send me a PM

This statement only shows how brainwashed you are by the media propaganda ;).

Well...we all are brainwashed to some extend. It depends what brand of detergent you like that the media tends to offer... :)
