Poris, any info on this surname?

On my grandmother's side, her family surname was "Poris".
To me this always sounded a bit Czech or Slovak maybe? I believe the family on that side was originally from Galicia.
Unfortunately my grandparents passed away a few years ago, I would love to trace my family tree though.
Does anyone have any insight into that surname? Polish meaning, etc
thanks!

Hi fly!

Looking at two resources Polish surnames: Origins and Meaning by Hoffman and Moikrewni.pl under Mapa Nazwisk page, I was not able to find that surname.

Is it possible it was mispelled. If they came to America through a port their data may be recorded on-line.

Similar surname could possibly be Popis, Poros and Poraz but they have different meanings. You definitely need to find some documents that have the name spelled out. Or you are right and Poris is not a Polish name.

Czerwony - thanks!

Yes this one is tricky as I cannot find anything that matches very well. I was thinking that maybe it was mispelled by US Customs when first arriving here.
That was quite common from what I hear. "Poris" and "Poriz" would be pronounced nearly the same in Polish (no distiction between the s and z at the end of the word). To an English-speaking customs agent, an "s" would make more sense than a "z". So maybe it's Poriz? Like "Paulina Porizkova" for instance? Who knows..
The Czech word : "poříz" seems to somewhat fit, but then the pronunciation changes, no? I'm confused...:^P

If its Poriz then there are two people as of a recent census that are from Wałbrzych area in southwestern Poland. Go to moikrewni.pl and go to the bottom of the page and click on Mapa Nazwisk. From there type in Poriz and up will come a map of Poland with that location.

There was no Poris in Mapa Nazwisk. I'll check one more source.

very interesting! I do vaguely recall some talk of my grandmother's family being from Jelenia Gora. The proximity of Wałbrzych to Jelenia Gora is unmistakable.

Talk to your relatives and get as much information as you can from them. Prepare yourself first with questions so you can get what you need. Good luck!

I could be on the wrong track here but when i hear Poris - i think i would spell it 'porys'. If so, why it got changed by only one letter, what diff that made, who knows. I've had a look at few diff sites using this spelling and came up with alot. Heaps in chicago on ancestry.com.

W Polsce s± 32 osoby o nazwisku Porys.
Zamieszkuj± oni w 5 różnych okręgach i miastach. Najwięcej zameldowanych jest w s. Wałbrzych a dokładnie 14.
Dalsze okręgi/miasta ze szczególnie duż± liczb± osób o tym nazwisku Ropczyce (8), Racibórz (4), s. Rzeszów (4) i s. Wrocław z liczb± wpisów

Porys also comes up on Mapa Nazwisk in Moikrewni.pl . S. Wałbrzych is also listed for this surname variant.
The pronunciation would be almost identical in English and Polish. Good insight Syrena.
