Could President Putin be getting away with murder or is it just a coincidence that speaking out in Russia gets you gunned down?

Politkovskaya was the 13th journalist slain in a contract-style killing in Russia since Putin took office in 2000, the U.S.-based Committee to Protect Journalists said.

I was watching this on the news last night. It may be he is making himself know on a larger scale. It's the youth groups (not even able to drink, due to their ages) that are seeing Putin as bigger than God. Carol

I guess if you want to avoid this subject. You could post that question on your own vs. changing mine to another question. Carol

It's nothing new. In Russian culture they want to have a "father of the nation".

Truthfully, I see Putin, and think "Stalin"& "Hitler". Good old USA has Bush, not the best relationship with Putin. To many chief's not enough indians. Poland being placed right in the middle.

Why so much anger toward Putin?...he is a Russian nationalist, making moves that are in
the Russian interest...as far as his enmity toward Poland, there was an artical in, I believe, the Warsaw Financial Times, talking about new discussions between Poland &
Russia over economic issues, and it was mentioned that Russia has a proposal for a new pipeline through Poland: this doesn't sound like economic warfare, but rather like
an olive branch...Russia today is not the Soviet Union, and it would seem to be in Poland's best interests to at least talk to Putin; Russia is your biggest & most powerful neighbor; there is no way around it....................Merry Christmas, Joe.

But the EU itself is a conglomorate, made up of individual staes with their own self-interest...have good relations with the EU, but also Russia...the EU itself is afraid of Russian independence, but this makes no sense either, as Russia is the largest country in the world, and naturally will wield a lot of power...Poland should not put all of it's eggs in one basket, but seek to gain advantage through many different relationships.

i have nothing against the russians, but after visiting my russian friends id say that te people arent getting a fair deal. id also point out that the E.U has made many attempts to have ties with russia, i think its more russia not wanting to have ties with the E.U which is the problem

In 1995 1500 people died in six months in Moscow due to mafia attacks.8 bankers were killed.
What has Putin done?He imprisoned and killed the mafiosos and the oligarchs. What is wrong with that?I forgot, these people had huge contracts with the West.

You have put the question of Putin in a nutshell...Many Polish people have fallen under
the American spell...it is time for new thinking in Polish circles...thinking 'outside of the box'.

but if a country tries to hide their problems, what does that say about the country??

Every country has 'skeletons in the closet'...the US closet is, in fact, a veritable boneyard.

Where have you been? Do a google or sth. There are protests all the time. Unlike the media in Europe, the media here doesn't show this stuff as much. Every tme I turn on the News from EU there's always someone protesting.

LOL there's even a website that sells protest posters and provides dates.

Brate Greg don`t be so cruel

Listen, i suggest to Poles that they give chance to Russia. You know Serbs now work closely with Russians on some projects in connection with gas/oil transportation and we already have beneficial status in approach to Russian market/resources (all as Russian support because of pressure on Serbs from so called west). Then, when Serbs strengthen their position again and recuperate, we would provide batter conditions for Poles, too. Balance among Slavs would be re-established. Russians would play positive role this time, believe to Serb :)

Later, when Poland strengthen, we would talk about certain things that Poles as important Slavic and Catholic country could arrange/solve for Serbs. Also, Polish support to Serbs would be of great importance, considering great Polish moral influence on Serbian society/public and in general on region.

and, of course, we won`t forget Lusatian question

As you can see brate Greg, we have a lot of to do. That is above importance of Putin or any other politician

i don`t know for Hilary but her husband Bill is crazy as electricity. He and his complete administration were among biggest idiots in American history, an abomination

I can`t forget how James Rubin, when wanted to declare that bombardments of Serbia started, lost his pencil in front of journalists, ... started to speak and in the same time tried to reach his pencil. Man looked like complete moron. But, moron with power behind him, that for sure

I refer you all to a great guy who seems to have something to say, none other than Garry Kasparov, ex-world chess champion. He seems like a level-headed guy who is putting many views out there for scrutiny. I fear for his life though given his high profile in the eyes of many Russians. He has already started to instigate changes in mentality but I think Putin, given his stranglehold on govt depts, sees him as a fly to be swiped when he starts getting too near. Nonetheless, that doesn't detract from the good things he has been saying. He has been active through the American media, seeing it as a safer channel through which to voice his opinions. I must say also that I'm not anti-Putin, one could argue that Bush is creating more of a police state than Mr Putin is

This incident you speak of was the work of Boris Berosovsky.

Putin reminds me of Fedor Emelianenko, the PRIDE fighting champion who he has met. Putin was also a fighter, judo I think, but that doesn't qualify him for Man of the Year. He has been more willing to accept Iran's claims that they are using nuclear energy for useful purposes, as opposed to malicious ones. However, operating under a climate of fear as is the case in parts of Russia is far from ideal. Not Man of the Year

I found it curious that TIME Magazine chose him as 'man of the year', because the Western press usually paints him as a demon.

Ever heard of pacifism? Placating has been used as a tactic in the past. Man of the Year may just mean he was the most eventful, not the most prolific
