I have a small, online translation "agency." From time to time I receive English<>Polish translation requests I'm not able to complete myself (due to time constraints - I'm not a full-time translator). I'm looking for a reliable person who would be willing to help me (also during the times I cannot be online).

The process is "nice and easy" - when I have a text to translate (and have already received payment for it), I would send the person the text and the due date it needs to be completed by. Once it's translated, the person sends the text to me and I pay him/her (either via paypal.pl or westernunion once the amount is reasonably high). I can offer $0.05 per word (5 cents per word). I wish the USD rate was a little higher, but it's still not bad.

Of course, the person must have at least some translation experience and know English and Polish very well. I would like to check one or two translation examples.

You may contact me in English via the contact form.

For those who think it is a "scam", I have a website and I'll email the interested person using the website email (not hotmail/yahoo or other funny emails ;).

Hi, I'm a professional translator of Polish, English, and Czech and would possibly be able to handle the extra texts you've got. I've got several years experience in translations (medical, technical, literary etc.) Let me know: itterio@o2.pl.

What are your usual rates? In Poland the text is usually measured in pages and the rate depends on the length of the text, time allowed for translation, whether it's Polish to English or the other way round and if it's general English or e.g. business.

You must be joking - 0.5 cents per work??? The lowest industry standard in North America is 0.16 cents/word and you should know that since you are in the US.
So, how much are you taking for yourself, buddy?

I don't charge more than 10 cents per word (usually in the 7-8 range). Don't know where you have taken "the lowest industry standard" table from, but if you live in the US or another Western country you should know we don't have set "retail prices" [cen detalicznych] like in some of the Eastern Europe countries. It's a free market.

From my experience as a freelance translator I know customers who seek translation services from a freelance translator won't usually pay more than 10 cents. Of course, companies that translate for corporations in some cases may charge more - possibly $0.16 per word.

The rate should really depend upon the nature of the text to be translated, the amount of time given to complete the translation (Most professional translators would struggle with over 2,500 words a day) and the format of the original text (We have received some really bad texts in the past - usually badly faxed or photocopied text).

Translators have to understand that most (reputable) translation agencies use at least one other translator (to review/proofread the document) before the final text is sent out to the client. I would advice working in Euros rather than $ though - 0.05 Euros per word sounds better!

I didnt' know now the whole Europe is now in the communism era. In the US the price is determined by the free market. If one day every second Polish immigrant decides he or she wants to be a Polish-English translator, the rate per word would dramatically drop overnight.

So if I offer a translator from Europe a rate of E0.10 per word, he or she will show me a document stating that: "In Europe the standard rate is E0.11 per word. Do not contact me again or I will report you to the Euro Tribunal"? What kind of logic is that.

Apologies, I didn't mean to come across as sarcastic, I simply intended to show you why the response was poor.

The standard rate in Ireland is E0.15 per word and in Dublin, its approx E0.24 per word.

I know of one business based here in Ireland which offers rates closer to the price that you are looking for.

Send me a mail if your are interested in the website link and I will reply

Hi Tom,

If you're not able to find anyone through this forum, let me know as I have a niece in Poland who major is in English language and she already does has done some translation work and would probably be ok with the rate.
