A question to immigrants

Hi all,

I'm Brit, now in 2004 I watched eagerly for eastern Europeans to come here and to fill the 600,000 jobs we were told needed to be filled. And true to my hopes 600,000 Poles did come, followed by another 600,000 and then almost another 600,000.

Don't get me wrong if its a choice between a White, European Christian and a Black Muslim I'd rather have the White Christian but it seems EU immigrants (namely Poles) are coming here and (admittedly) working very hard, but it is stirring up tensions among native Brits. I'm not one of them (in my line of work there is no danger of immigrants pushing down my wages because immigrants tend to occupy jobs in construction and industry).

This rift between Brits and Poles is particularly unfortunate for me as my paternal great grandfather was a Pole who fought for the British army during the Second World War and was given the right to come to the UK after the war in return for his service. So (until recently) I carried a Polish surname. I've become tarred with the same brush as these EU immigrants despite being 7/8ths English, speaking no Polish and never having been to Poland.

Anyway my question is do any of you realise that this situation WILL boil over into the likes of the Brixton riots. I've had to change my surname to my mother's maiden name to avoid heckling from angered Brits.

I don't blame anyone for wanting to come here and work themselves to the limit to make money (and Poles are the least unemployed ethnic group in the UK). You have contributed millions (if not billions) of pounds to the UK economy but thanks to newspapers like the Daily Mail running constant stories on Polish immigrants commiting crimes and pushing up house prices it is reaching boiling point.

Whatever credibility your arguement has, goes right out the window with this statement. Go to bed little boy, it's way past your bedtime.

You didn't have to change your surname, you choose to. If the Daily Mail wants to besmirch immigrants that it's porogative. As a descendant of an immigrant yourself you should realize that despite pressure and danger, immigrants move to provide a better situation for their descendants. This isn't done to spite the "naturals" of the country they've moved to, but at the same time, if it ruffles some feathers few immigrants will care.

So you would rather have a Somalian (85% of whom come here and claim benefits) who is a war mongering, trouble making Muslim than a White civilised Christian?

Well call me a traitor or ashamed of my heritage, whatever you like. But when I submit a job application I don't want the guy seeing my surname and thinking to himself "f****** Polack, I ain't gonna give him the job".
If you believe there is not a lot of people like that then you have clearly never been to the West Midlands.

Why would you want to work in the first place for a racist company that discriminates against you for something you can't change? Oh, wait, you did change it. Way to assimilate, young man!

Yes its called assimilation and when in Rome do as the Romans do. Instead of when in Rome do whatever you like.

I have no reason to hold that surname, I don't speak Polish, I have no living relatives who are Polish, I've never had a Polish girlfriend, I've never been to Poland so why carry a Polish surname when I can just as easily have an English one?

Why would I want to work for a racist company? You ain't very fast are you? I am racist and I'd rather be surrounded by a bunch of blokes who think I'm a Polack but I can happily talk to about how much I hate non-Whites than with a bunch of liberals.

No. I don't work in a fast food shop, actually I'm training to join the police. But I'd hate to just get the job because of my ethnic name rather than on the merit of my skills.

What i do like though is that everybody points to the media, when the poles get a bashing, however there is the saying 'no smoke without fire' while i'm not saying the Poles are awful and i want them out, there must be something to all this tension apart from the media spreading lies :):):)

Tornado the reason people want them out is because a Polish guy will work 15 hour days for £3 an hour and skip breaks but an Englishman wants his £8 an hour and an hour for lunch.

So because of this construction companies always want the Poles who are cheap to hire and dilligent.

I may be a slav but my skull shape, hair colour, eye colour and facial features tell a whole different story.
Besides due to Irish immigration (and let's be honest half of the Irish look like darkies) a lot of Brits who pass for Anglo-Saxon are part Irish.

I've had people assume I'm an idiot or think I'm a moron, but you'll never see me get rid of the "ski" in my name. I believe in owning up for what you are, and even though I wish we didn't have to claim you, you're Polish, buddy. By the by, if you're still looking for employment, come to the States, I'm sure the Klan could find a job for you.

I don't witness anything bad happening to Poles. I work with Poles and the English and Poles have a laugh with each other. I've played football matches with Poles. I've taken Poles to Old Trafford to watch England v Andorra in the Euro 2008 Qualifier and 2 of them already had England shirts in their possession. We have a bit of banter and sometimes someone throws their dummy out of the pram. I'm guilty of this. But at the end of the day there's no hostility. If any of you asked Polish people in Nottingham if they received any hostility they will say no. The English go drinking with the Polish there. If you asked the Polish in Preston if they receive any hostility I also think they'll say no. However on one occasion I worked in Blackpool. Four Polish people started. It was just an agency job until I got settled as I had just moved here. I remember they were silent with me at first and stuck to their own. Then I asked them to come out for a drink and had a laugh with them. I remember one of them telling me he assumed that all English people were anti-Polish. When I asked why? He told me he had problems with some English at his previous jobs and assumed that there was a vibe against Poles. They were the only Poles I have heard of that had received any hostility against them by the English.
It was shocking as in Nottingham nationality is pushed aside with Poles and English and they go out for a pissup, or partying.
I got kicked out of my parents' house in Nottingham years ago and it was a Polish couple that gave me accommodation for a few days til I sorted myself out. They were disappointed when I left!

Hostility against Polish people isn't everywhere and it isn't from anyone. Nottingham even has bars with signs on the windows that encourages Polish people to enter. I have, however, met a few Polish people that were ignorant, arsey and anti-English. After mixing in with the other Poles I knew it was just a minority and paid no attention to them.

I would consider the KKK but they think eastern Europeans are inferior. And maybe they're right judging by these infantile reactions.

No no it's only the National Front for me.

hay mate to be honest i can totally sympathise with people in your position, believe me i do, i'm on here always talking about immigration here immigrants there. I do feel though that you could make your point in a more mature manner and not make yourself and other people who have the same frustrations as you look slightly stupid by the language and over aggressive manner.
