I have found a male relative, immigrating to the US with his mother, with the surname Rankoska. Later I have seen the spelling for his name as Renkosik. Is the -ska suffix used for females, and another ending used for males?

Well, both "Ranoska" and "Renkosik" may be referred to female last name.

"Renkosik" is used both for males and females while "Renoska" refers to a female ["Renoski" would refer to a male].
