Just to return to something Beckski mentioned on page 1:

What about the dying of hair to have a reddish tinge?
I'm not neccesarily talking about accidents with dye resulting in gingerness!
I'll save blonde/dark/pink/blue/green dyed hair for another occasion.

Very common at henna parties I believe.

I only did it on a temporary basis, for last year's holiday season. I wouldn't keep a reddish tint on my hair permanently.

Must be descended from Irish - there's lots of people like that here.

I know the Irish used to move abroad a lot in the past, like many Poles do now,
but there are gingers all over Europe, and there are even occasional traces of redness of hair in Japan (maybe that's the Ainu).
Udmurts are one of the Finno-Ugric peoples in Russia, somewhere east of the Volga.
They have a relatively high percentage of redheads, and I doubt any Irish settled there ever.

The MC1R gene is responsible for red hair...

Interestingly, this news item came up today.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20071025/tsc-science-neanderthals-us-e123 fef.html

Not too sure on the Polish connection though!

As for Poles in the UK, I've not met any with red hair.

In the not so distant future, I plan on lending some more redheaded genes to the Polish gene pool :) My boyfriend is Polish, and I'm American, but my family is from Ireland on both sides of the family tree, and I've been blessed with ruddy tresses :)
