And what a "marriage" is? Is it a bond between 2 human beings?
Then why a mature human being would need a permission form their parents/ the church/ the state to have sex with another human being? If you feel in your heart that this is the right woman and she feels you're the right man - are you not married already just by the way you feel? If you are a mature person, will you not feel responsible for the woman you bonded with even without an official marriage certificate? If you love and respect someone, and respect their freedom to love you and to stop loving you - would you need the certificate of possession to feel emotionally secure?

On the other hand, if you're not mature, if you don't feel responsible, if you don't respect the other person - even a hundred certificates will not help you.

That piece of paper comes in really handy when people get divorced or one of the spouses dies.

No sex before marriage was practical in the old days, where women had to be taken care of financially and there was no contraception. And the families of young girls who kept guard around her crotch were not protecting their virginity but their own finances. If a girl got knocked up and the lover would run away, it was the family responsibility to feed and clothe additional mouths. If a girl had sex and the word got out, it would be impossible for her to find another suitor. So again, the spinster becomes family's responsibility.

Has anyone here heard of the Danish peasant method? A farmgirl's suitor was allowed to spend the summer nights with her in a barn and if she became pregnant then they would marry. That was a way of proving the couple's fecundity and thus assuring they were capable of creating a new generation of farmers.

Conservative legal institution, one of the goals is to protect the family unit as a vital social category for the society. Moral, discipline. State is getting via marriage control over the existing relationships (or church previously or alternatively).

I personally see the institution as a rope around people's the necks.
Loss of freedom. (don't argue about this one, it is just my personal view, without any intention to generalize that)

It is out of the sexual conjunction of male and female that new human life normally comes into existence. The burden that falls to the female is infinitely greater. This reality requires some form of societal response, some provisions for the female who accepts this unequal burden. This response comes in the legal contract we call marriage.
