i agree with that, but you just gotta know what you're doing and be sensible. dating sites usually tell you to meet up in crowded places for the first time, and dont give away your home address etc. and you WILL find success stories, dating websites urge their users to share their positive experiences. meeting someone decent and genuine on the net is of course possible, you just gotta be patient and lucky. its not the same as socialising, but some people have no time or no courage to go out and approach potential partners. i agree that makin the effort to actually go out, even if you describe yourself as "shy" WILL boost your confidence and its definitely a more fun way of meeting people, cos youre out having a good time and so are they, plus after a few drinks people are up for a laugh and more relaxed. but if youre not in a mood for a night out, you have no time or youre a single parent & have noone to babysit, internet is good. i have bad and good experiences of meeting people off the net, but some of them whom i met that way 6 years ago are still my friends today and i think its awesome. keep your options opened, maybe try a bit of both - socialising and internet dating, its not gonna hurt. my friend has met a guy on a dating website about 4 months ago and now they are basically living together and talking about getting married and having a baby! she met lots of dodgy men before him on the same website but she didnt give up and now shes the happiest woman ever, shes GLOWING lol. id definitely give the thumbs up to anyone trying to find their other half on the internet, i just dont like when people are full on like "i wanna find a husband", and absolutely fed up with Turkish & other muslims. internet dating is good in moderation, dont let the cyber world take over your life. its sad to see more and more very young people depending on it to find a partner or a friend.

I guess that the problem with meeting people on the internet is sometimes that you don't really know the person but your imagination is working and you talk more with what you've imaginated than the real person. you know what i mean.
and then you meet off the net and... well, there's nothing between you, you cannot have a normal conversation - he turns to be a guy with complexes, without any friends and every minute you are less surprised he hasn't got any... (it's only an example)
to sum up: yes, it is pathetic!

I donlt think it is pathetic, it is simply disfunctional and I have tried it myself with really meek reasults. It is true that imagination fills the gaps beceause you don;t see that person, so as humans we compansate which obviously can bring some unexpexted results.

The good thing is that it is good for an initial contact, which can be carry on in real life as soon as possible.

A good thing about meeting people in real life is that you can read their body language instantly, the tone of voice and since a lot of communication is non-verbal up to 90%, chatting online doesn't relly help you to get to know the person at all. it gives you a false idea of who somebody is.

So, real life is much better to meet people. We are social beings, not a virtual beings.

I was always against online dating and since I tried it myself I still stand by what I said: real life is better.

I agree with most of what you say. A good mix of Internet and offline socialising is probably a good idea. However, let's take the shy person for example. If you're sitting in a pub/club with your friends and some guys come over and one tries to talk to you but you are too shy to make conversation then they probably won't make any further effort with you. Sounds tough but that's the way it is. An alternative for them is Internet dating. An example of a good site is Sarah Beeny's where you're asked to get involved with a friend. She's taken away that whole 'dirty secret' thing about Internet dating.

I agree with this as well and it's part of why people see Internet dating as negative and "pathetic".
