Wigilia is taken very seriously in this house. i can't account for the bottle as i've never asked. plenty of church going (private) students have expressed the same in conversation. however, plenty more have denied the bottle.
it might have something to do with the traditions of families from the east, Poland/Ukraine.

Kutia is another thing you'll see in these parts, but not all others.

Yep, plenty of booze at Xmas here too (if it wasn't for the kids I wouldn't bother :-D)
From today December 1st, in UK, all the decorations are up; at least two weeks before Poland, so it's comparatively more miserable in Poland, and more of a joie de vivre in UK.

Not in Ireland anyway. I don't know anyone who has their stuff up yet. I think maybe the 8th might be a bit of a date for that but it's not nationally observed or anything.

Might put our tree up some time over the weekend.

animals do speak with human voices at midnight, but no-one hears them because they are at midnight mass and pets are left at home.

Um, couldn't she just enjoy an Irish Christmas...? Don't worry, if you stay together, you'll be having LOTS of Polish Christmasses in the future. :) Life's about adapting.

Im Irish, I simply mixed the two traditions of our countries/families traditions(realised how much traditions Ireland actually does not have). But we made pierogi and she got hay!, they put it under the doilies or something and whoever gets the longest string of hay gets luck for an entire year or something :) also she may have been lying but they open their presents on christmas eve and eat seafood for a christmas meal, I objected to this one, hate seafood haha I just made Irish coffee and we got hammered on whiskey and vodka- truly mixing the traditions there lol
