In Polish, many words can be formed, and eventually figured out, through their stems. For example, "rodzina" (family) derives from "rod" with an acute accent mark over the "o" making it sound like "root" in English. It actually means almost the same thing in Polish. Below a sample word "family"

naROD = nation (i.e. stem/root(s) of the country
RODzina = family (i.e. where we stem from, our roots)
RODzice = parents
etc.

There is probably a conection between the word 'rodzina'-family and the verb rodzic/urodzic and rodzic sie/urodzic sie-to give birth. Interesting, because I had never really put the word 'narod' and 'rodzina' together but then I suppose the whole dictionary can be seen to have Greek and Latin roots and conections between one word and another. There is possibly a conection between the word 'dom' for a house and the English equivalent of domesticated.

Having thought about it a little further, could there be a conection in the Polish word for a garden i.e. 'ogrod'?

I think the only possible connection would be if you grew "root" vegetables in your garden. :))

You are probably right, ogrod probably comes from ogrodzenie or something similar-otherwise maybe it is a place where you grow root vegetables. who knows?

Sorry to disappoint you, but there is NO etymological connection between those two concepts in Polish for the following reason: "o - GROD" , not " og-ROD".

I think that we have already discussed that and have come to the same conclusion about a week ago! Anyway, what is the difference between og-rod and o-grod? It is exactly the same thing.
