Maybe bricks are short in Poland, but it's hard to imagine to import bricks from China (perhaps the Chinese wall is being dismantled like it was in East Germany several years ago? :)

i met a german this evening who is supervising the building of the new shopping centre in wrzeszcz... there is such a shortage of everything in poland that they are importing everything from everywhere... including concrete and bricks from all over and workers from berlin... who are cheaper than local workers... infact that a german compant won the contract to build the centre in the first place is because they were cheaper than the polish bidders...

Yes, but the transportation cost must be extremely high (especially when building materials are very heavy)..

We've got a shortage of garden fencing here because all the wood is going to China.

True.

World has gone mad.

That is happening in Wroclaw too. But I think the workers are coming from depressed areas of east Germany.

this guy says the company is recruiting from berlin... they hire locals, train them and then they bugger off abroad and everything gets delayed so the best oiption is to bring workers in from germany and at least the job gets down sort of to schedule..... sort of...

But how is it possible that Germans would build cheaper than Poles living in the area? Most of the Polish regions could be considered "depressed" too. I think the problem is with the workers' attitude.

I can't argue with what the guy says, but we can be sure that German builders are going to be more prevalent.

What is going on in Poland in this aspect is upside-down. Poles go to the UK or Germany in search of better jobs; British and Germans now start going to Poland to do the same. Unless they mix business with pleasure (business - job, pleasure - visiting/traveling to a new country).
