maybe they do - with other people who speak their language.

yes exactly, this creates gaps in society, groups of people packing together so you get 'litle poland' or 'little india' etc etc.

they must know the risk if they do not learn it

As it seems does the EU

Yes and this needs to change. All ways.

You think it's fine but imagine moving over to Poland next week with your limited command of the language. You'd be expecting everyone in Poland to communicate with you in English? Or do you think you could muddle by?

I wouldn't and I don't think those coming here would expect us to speak their language either. But I would have to learn for my own happiness and for me, under my cicumstances, to feel that I could get by in a country which speaks another language first. But that is my personal choice

No they wouldn't.

Correct. To try and scrap by with minimal language skills would only add negativity to your stay.

You'd be quite happy then, to move to Poland (for example) and not learn the language but expect to get by, expect Polish people to understand what you mean when you try and explain in bad Polish/mixed with English, what you want?

My point is, you choose to move to another country to live, you should accept that you must learn the language, even basically. Whether that is someone moving to here or elsewhere.

should

probably, and for a higher chance for happiness

I think it is something anyone moving to a country of another language should do, but I also believe that it is right to admit those who don't - for the woman at work has done well since her move here, and if those examples you give are something people who would refuse to learn will face, then surely that is enough to make them change their minds, if not they must be happy enough not to.

I will add, I don't know anyone who came here who doesn't want to learn English at all - it seems to be a given that learning the language will make life easier for them/create more chance of happiness in this country.

Well that's how the debate goes I guess - I know lol, you didn't think one of us would convince the other did you? I think our opinions are firmly set either way.

In fact they do not always learn English and there is not always a reason to do so. A lot of these Polish workers are still based in Poland and just come over to England 'by invitation' when there is a job to go to. We know of workers who come over and sleep wherever they can to do the job before going home. We know of a Polish family that is converting their garage in to another downstairs room for £6,000 whereas it would cost £30,000 if they were to employ British workmen to do the same thing. The trouble is of course, is how do these prices compare after a couple of years when they know that they can start to earn the same as local tradesmen.

Let's not get confused about all the different rights we have.
It must do what it says on the tin, or statutory rights are not being fulfilled.

yeah why not we should learn english so that you can come to our country and live in your little groups of Polish and not mixing with us, what a stupid idea, although it seems you were speaking tongue in cheek.

Although the overall answer to the question posed, is pretty simple

YES

I think that anyone going to another country to work and live should learn that countries language. It helps the people intergrate easier. And for work reasons there is an elimant of Health and Safety. There is a factory near where I live that actually wont employe any immagrants if they dont speak basic English.
