Are there a lot of goths in Poland?

There is this well known goth music festival in Germany called Wave Gotik Treffen. The official web site is in English and of course German. However, there is also a third language and it's Polish. I find this interesting as I would expect the site to output in the major languages of Europe such as French, Spanish, Italian, and possibly even Dutch. So it seems very strange that the site has a Polish version. Is this festival popular for Poles to visit? Are there a lot of goths in Poland? (Or least people who are fans of goth music?)

PlasticPole: More than you realize! When I was in London, there was a group of goths at a pub/restaurant I was at and they were speaking Polish. They certainly can't be rare!

Rebirth: Are there a lot of goths in Poland? (Or least people who are fans of goth music?) probably more listen to the music than dress up the part. i listen to (and go to see) closterkeller and see them as a goth band.

Quite a lot, yes. You have to remember that younger Poles like to rebel against excessive conditioning and they have their own clubs and hangouts.

There are alot more Goths then you can see in Poland due to the fact that the skinnheads likes to beat them up. Many Goths avoid to wear "Goth clothes" in public and only wears them on Goth festivals and so on.

So, Goths, generally smart people, most often from "nice middle class " families ,many Goth girls are stunning but most goth lads are,well ,not being an expert but,fugly. A bit childishly obsessed with skulls and death but normally unlikely to have had more experience of death than flushing Mr Goldiekins the Goldfish down the toilet when they were 8.....
They are British Goths, is this a universal truth re Goths?

I am all for individual expression and freaking out squares, but the deferenntial sartorial practice explained in the quotation above seems very sensible for the Goths. Where I live, in sunny Southern California, funereally attired, white faced, black lipsticked Goths look positively silly in the bright sunlight amidst the palm trees. At night they don't look so foolish.

One can do this in a colourful manner, I used to make my own clothes and wear stuff for "shock value" but goths just look boring and unified..where is the individuality in that? "oh look....there's another goth"....

Sweeping generalisation....You'd be surprised that rather a lot are not from nice semi detatached house and they are in fact come off council estates...its all about rebelling...rather than class and more about seeking something..WTF I have no idea...As for the girls...are you kidding..stunning is not a word Id use..sorry..

In that case aren't they *meant* to look like a marauding army...? A little barbaric...? Hard to subdue?

And if that *is* the case, it seems right that they should have followers from across Europe... they did after all migrate across large swathes of the continent...

The desire to appear to have darkened features might have something to do with the territories in which the Visigoths predominated... predominantly southern and Balkan territories... but Germanic in heritage which would explain their terrible dress sense, dubious taste in music and good looks... ;)

One thing is for sure.. they have well and truly outlived the Punks. ;)

The Visigoths settled in Spain, not in the Balkans. Their capital there was Toledo.

I think the Polish Goths are descendants rather of the Ostrogoths,or "Goths from the rising sun" ie, east goths.
their greatest ruler invaded Rome and bought off the Pope in the 500s,funnily enough he was an Arien himself...............

I don't think Goths claim descent from either the Visigoths or the Ostrogoths (the latter were supposedly exterminated), but rather firstly from the Gothic novel and thus in a secondary way the Gothic architecture whose ruins inspired the novelists. The term used in conjunction with architecture was originally a pejorative used by Italians, of the late middle ages, who were quite fond of the Romanesque style and were faced with this bizarre new style from the North hence they named it after the barbarians who had sacked imperial Rome. So in a funny way the modern Goths are called by a word that originally meant "ugly style" and lo and behold most people think just that about their style!

Dont worry dessi, i wasnt seriously suggesting they take after Goths, Like you say,its Gothic,or rather Gothic revival (wow,used that term twice in one week on PF,must be some record) from Gothic horror etc. :) or,rather,in keeping with the Goth theme. : {

I recently read Stoker's Lair of the White Worm and I wondered if the legendary apostate king of Mercia that is the transmigratory villian of the novel is at all a well known historical figure in Britain. Regarding his Dracula I would say it had a Slavophobic theme in that it depicted Slovaks as the count's most ardent human henchmen that didn't desert him when even his Gypsy minions had.

In Britain I would guess not. There was the Ken Russell film with Mrs long legs Amanda Donohoe though. But I dont know....I like Mr Men Books:)
