Angieszka Holland's World War II drama In Darkness will represent Poland in next year's Foreign Language Oscar race. The story of a smalltime Polish crook who becomes a hero saving Jews from the Holocaust stars Robert Wieckiewicz, Agnieszka Grochowska and Kinga Preis alongside German actors including Benno Furmann and Maria Schrader.

Holland is a two-time Oscar nominee, having received a Best Foreign Language Film nomination in 1986 for Angry Harvest and a Best Adapted Screenplay nom for Europa, Europa in 1992.

Yea I would have liked to see one really good film about the Polish 'Warsaw Uprising' or something else related to Poles instead of more about Jews as if they were the only ones who suffered. But since there were the same old threads on the forum figured I'd start a new one.

Wasn't Katyn nominated some 2 years ago?

And a good movie about Warsaw Uprising is Kanał also by Andrzej Wajda. It's very good, but I would say the best around.

Saw it. I mean something as good as 'Ogniem i Mieczem' or better with a good cast but something from Polish history worth noting. I know it was made for propaganda purposes but a 1988 Polish-Soviet film called 'Przeprawa' I though was worth watching. It's based on a true story about the largest underground/partisan battle that took place in occupied Poland, the battle was waged between 9th-25th of June 1944 in the Janowskie, Lipskie forests and the Solska Wilderness in the Lublin area. It was a co Polish-Soviet struggle.
If you'd like to watch it can be downloaded here just piece by piece but it downloads fast

Merged: film - w ciemnosci agnieszka holland

Hello.

Has anyone seen this film, is it any good, and when is it out on dvd in Poland or England?

I loved Pianist, Schindlers list and Katyn wasn't bad either. How does it compare to those? Are there any other films in particular Polish films that are of similar topics

Thanks.
