Calendar of Polish Name Days

Tried searching on google, but couldn't find a calendar style list for name days, anybody know a good place for one ?

I've never, ever heard of Polish name days. Is that different to your birthday or confirmation name day ? Who makes these things up ? :)

I guess its just part of the culture to remember name-days (a patron saint's day - rather than birthdays). This anniversary is important for Poles and as far as i know, in no other culture is it celebrated in such a special way

I don't know the history though, but it seems most celebrate their name's day on the first opportunity after their birthday.

I was brought up in a Polish culture :) by two Polish parents & Polish community.
I know it was important to be named after a Patron Saint or a Holy/Blessed person. But I never heard about celebrating that Patron Saints Day.

I only have Polish genes in me, though I wasn't born there nor do I live there <grin>

There are some threads on Name Days already on PF so you could browse through them. More popular names appear often on the name day calender. Traditionally your name day is the first one after your birthday. However, you can really choose which one you like. My birthday is in November and my first name day appears in April. Some people celebrate their "Imieniny" some don't.

My friend just told me about name day. She moved to America from Poland when she was 11 (now 28). I wanted to surprise her by getting her something on her name day this year, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which day would be her name day.

Her name is Karolina. I've found some sites that actually have days for Karolina, but others only have days for Karol. How do I know which day she used to celebrate in Poland?

Name days for Karolina are: * 9 May * 5 July * 18 July * 18 November When multiple name days are present for a given name then often the one that follows and is closest to the person's birthday is celebrated.

Thank you. I was finding that there was more than one, also. But I wanted to make sure that I used the right one. So, with her birthday being November 23, her name day would be November 18, then? -Christine

Thread attached on merging: what does named day mean? i was talking to a friend the other day and he said something about before he has his birthday they have a name day, he did try to explain what this means but although he has very good english he had trouble translating this for me.... can anyone help me out as im very interested to find out more about his culture thank you :-) x

In Poland people do not throw parties for birthday but they do for name day as Polish calendar on each day has a names associated with so let’s say you were born on September 1 and they call you John your name day ( name associated with yours on calendar) was October 15 that would be your name day

My birthday, and name's day are both the same, my name is Michael, and I was born on September 29th. also, this was my grandfather's name's day, and he had a big party going on when he heard of my birth, so he said, this would be my name, and my parents went along with it. But if I lived in Poland, now, I would be cheated out of one party. Mike

Not so. You would not be cheated because you can pick any day in calendar showing your name. As mentioned above most common is to celebrate your name day on first occasion after your birthday. Some people choose different season or time apart from holidays.

Name Days are very beneficial socially, because we often don't know someones birthday (colleague at work or acquaintance) and we can wish them Happy Name Day or celebrate it with flowers, card or other gift.

Additionally nobody is trying to figure out or ask how old we are and how many candles to put on the cake. :)
It really works out quite friendly because when you see people's name on calendar it reminds you that you know someone with that name and often give them a call :)

I believe the Namenstag (nameday) is also celebrated in Bavaria. Can any German verify that?

No such name in traditional Polish. Seems to me that your in-laws apparently liked the sound of Layla, so they deliberately misspelled the old-fashioned name Lila or Lilianna.
