Doctors taking bribes in Poland

I've heard people in Poland try to always bribe doctors, as far as people I know are concerned its a necessity in Poland, not so much for myself as im English.....they do try harder for foreigners - well Western foreigners atleast. But some Polish families they bribe and they ALWAYS accept.

I'd be interested to find out others perspectives on this issue.

Do we drive the machine paying bribes?
Do Doctors really earn enough without bribes?
Who pays the bribes, im thinking its the poor people that are more likely to shove a few hundred zloty in the Doctors back pockets.
How integrated in the system is this corrupt procedure?
Does it come down to who pays and who does not? I'm sure it does, fcuk that i know it does. Can any foreigners imagine paying a bribe in Britian, France, Germany or America?

Bribes really do save lives...................................in Poland..................

Wroclaw Boy: Do we drive the machine paying bribes? I'd say YES. In this instance supply creates demand IMHO. I've never bribed a doctor in my life, and have never been asked (directly or indirectly) for a bribe. And I am still here to tell the tale ;-)

I don't need to bribe doctors as I'm as fit as a fiddle and have an NFZ card anyway. It all depends on the scale of the treatment you need.

Yes, but I think if the attitute of many doesnt change a few wont make a difference...Its a case of "well, they pay, they get better treatment" If everyone said no, then attitude would be different, but thats easy for me to say because I dont live in a country where its the "norm"

Its all relative really...A Doctor will earn more than a cleaner..and of course, he has taken a different path, but what he has that the cleaner doesnt is a whole host of moral ethic codes, for me Doctors that take bribes are breaking these ethic codes.

Not in my wildest dreams, but we do have this senario:

Wait 3 months on the NHS or pay to go private - so in Poland you give a backhander or in the UK you are forced to pay to go private (to see the same consultant by the way - you can ring him direct and make an appointment for his "private clinic")...Either way its the consultant that gets more cash...And this is becoming more and more the norm...I mentioned on a thread a while ago about my mum...

It probably happens in Poland as well, but personally I've been treated in Polish hospitals
3 times in my life and I've never had any experience with bribes (first or second hand -
nothing).

It must work for some patients. My wife's grnadmother had an appointment at a local clinic and had to sit for over 2 hours past the appointment time because other patients were just able to walk into the doctor's surgery in-front of her. Pretty disgusting, really, especially as she wasn't the only old person waiting.

Ive been hospitalised once in Poland, my wife paid a bribe on by behalf after surgery (appendix), the bribes i pay and have paid are for Polish family members, the doctors have never even laid eyes on me.

Your Polish right TIT youre ashamed i can tell, youve lived in the UK and your jealous, im sorry about that.... The fact is its so deep rooted in your corrupt culture it defies belief, it really comes down to a case of BRIBES SAVING LIVES, you poor, poor nation.................

Torq shows heart&soul. He is a well-travelled guy and is right on the money with many of his comments. I can testify to his generosity too. He is Polish in that he defends his own but is more balanced than many. So, Torq, it is a running joke that Polish doctors accept bribes. Any first-hand experiences as I haven't had any?

I didn't have any first-hand experience, but I've heard stories. I won't repeat them here though.

I might discuss this issue on a Polish forum (I mean Polish language forum with Polish members)
but not here. We have a saying in Poland - "Zły to ptak, co własne gniazdo kala", which roughly
translates to "It is a bad bird, that shi*ts to his own nest".

I've got first hand experience: my girlfriend spent five nights in a Warsaw hospital last year, supposedly one of the best in town. She spent the first three nights on a trolley in the corridor (I was trying to bribe staff to get her a bed but we didn't actually ever see anybody who could make the decision to give her a bed!) and then two nights in a room. None of the toilets on the entire floor had any toilet paper or any soap or any paper towels or hand driers, but they all had taps which you needed to hold firmly to turn on & off. I've increased our private health care package to include hospitalisation (in an entirely private hospital).

I have never bribed a doctor, but than again I have never been in a sitution in which I would need to. I did hear a lot of stories about it though. And when my wife got discharged after she gave birth to my daughter I did give the hospital staff some chocolates and coffe... Could we consider it a bribe or not? It was definately sooo PRL. :)

By the way, we all get free dental care in the UK to a certain age its up to parents to get their kids teeth sorted mine are straight (includes orthodontic treatment). What do you get in Bangladesh? You lot are lucky if you get a band aid if you have cancer!..

I've been to many countries in Europe, believe me, no such teeth like in UK you can get elsewhere in EU, maybe Romanian Gypsies are similar ones with no dental focusing really.

In the USA the costs are so high that unless you have insurance you can't afford it. Ton's of people get left in the cracks. Even WITH insurance you often pay more in associated fees than you would if you paid cash in Poland.

I don't care if the doctors take bribes as long as they do a good job. They get paid hardly anything in Poland anyway...I don't know how they get so many to bother with all the schooling since the salaries are so pathetic.
