Poland and Spain both won the Capital of Culture for 2016. Which Polish city do you think should get it, and why?

The candidate cities include Bialystok, Bydgoszcz, Gdansk, Katowice, Lublin, Lodz, Poznan, Szczeczin, Torun, Warsaw and Wroclaw.

Me personally, I think Warsaw, Torun, Gdansk or Wroclaw will get the award :)

i don't think wroclaw deserves it yet. the city should expand it's horizons beyond rynek. However, the culture of music in this city is strong.

I would like to see Wroclaw get it, although I believe it would be better placed with Gdansk, due to its historical ties with Solidarność and the strikes, which is known the world over. I also believe the tricity has a lot to offer tourists, who decide to spend a week discovering the area, which may encourage them to come back and try other cities in Poland.

the problem with wroclaw is that all can be seen in a couple of days. this could work to the city's advantage, if marketed properly. mini stays.

I would prefer Wrocław. It also has Lower-Silesia as a "background" with a lot of attractions.

Warsaw. Much to see, and do there, and it is a growing city, full of great people.

I agree, I believe Gdańsk would be a good choice, or Toruń.

I don't, it should be a typical Polish city, Krakow will be a better choice in this context.

It's a good choice, too. Lots of beauty, and Wawel is very impressive.

The selection panel appointed to assess the cities applying to be a European Capital of Culture in 2016 in Poland examined the 11 applications received and recommended that the following be preselected: Gdańsk, Katowice, Lublin, Warszawa and Wrocław

Where the hell is Krakow?

you hear Cracovians going on about how Krakow is the "Cultural capital' of Poland (typical rivalry between a large city and the capital, similar can be found in many countries).

Krakow didn't get the Euro Championship and aren't even a candidate for this, which I think they would love.

Are they incompetent or what?

no. they held the title it in the past (2000) and a winning city can't be put forward again.

They don't need it SeanBM, they are already on the tourist map, the other cities need a leg up.

Now that I think about it, I think Torun and Gdansk are the best choices. Torun is a lovely medieval city untouched by the war, and Gdansk has a lot of history from the solidarity movement. I don't even know why Katowice even bothered. The place is just depressing and miserable. Its just an industrial gray city with little culture.

it might have something to do with the fact that each city gets a little cash to tidy up and make it look pretty.

True. I think Poland should start renovation to many of the bloki mieszkalny. Many are very gray looking, and a new coat of paint and new windows makes a massive difference. I saw pictures of newly renovated Polish bloki, and with landscaping, paint and new windows, it gives Poland a better image. Not to mention it makes it look less depressing :)

I do hope it isn't Lublin, that town is far too nice to be spoiled by tourists.

Whats wrong with Lublin having more tourists? If anything, it needs more. Poland is not very well known around the world.

Merged: Great news for Lublin: Wroclaw is European Capital of Culture 2016

Superb news for Poland's best city!

A decision to choose Wroclaw was taken unanimously by an international selection panel of EU and Polish experts.

Announcing the verdict in Warsaw on Tuesday afternoon, chairman of the panel Manfred Gaulhofer said that the selection process was a success for all of Poland, for all the five cities in the final stage of the competition, and for Wroclaw, the winner.

Over the next five years, the city will continue to develop its cultural offer in order to become a truly European centre, capable of attracting an international audience and involving a broad spectrum of its residents into a wide range of cultural projects.

A seven-strong commission appointed by the European Parliament will monitor the city’s preparations for serving as the European Capital of Culture.

In May 2015 it will present its final report, on the basis of which the European Commission will be able to approve a 1.5 million euro in prize money, the so called Melina Mercouri Award.

The four losers in the race for the ECC title were Warsaw, Katowice, Gdańsk and Lublin. The delegates of Katowice and Lublin seemed to be particularly disappointed with the verdict and complained to the media that the title of the European Capital of Culture should be given to those cities for which culture only recently became a catalyst for growth whereas Wroclaw already now is a great cultural centre of a European calibre.

According to insiders, Lublin was close behind the winner.

I love Lublin. It is the underdog of Polish cities. It really has a lot to offer.
