KRASNODAR -- A festival of Polish culture and history will begin on Sunday in the southern Russian town of Krasnodar, the town mayor's press service said on Tuesday.

The festival, which is being held in Krasnodar for the eighth time, will open with a concert by a Polish folk group. A range of events dedicated to promoting Polish culture and improving Russian-Polish relations will then be held across the town.

Two local libraries will hold memorial evenings dedicated to World War II and the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald, in which the armies of the Kingdom of Poland, Russia and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania united to defeat the Teutonic Order.

The press service said exhibitions of Polish literature and paintings by the winners of a Russian- Polish children's fine art competition would also be held as part of the festival.

The cultural program is being held by local Polish cultural center Unity, which aims to improve cross-cultural relations and prevent extremism.

My mom told me the other day that the local baker in my village is having a Polish week. A week long, customers can sample and buy diverse types of Polish bread. It is expected to be a success.

Hasn't really had real Polish bread but knows all about it. Is fascinated by Polish culure though. Spendid.

BTW, I have about a dozen bakers selling bread within two hundred yards of me, and I don't mean bread-like product you get.

That was actually my question too. I wouldn't be surprised if it was somewhere in Siberia or in Saint Petersburg but in Krasnodar... That's good though. Cultural expansion söderut... ;)

Hm... I always thought that "town" is about something smaller. Krasnodar has 710000+ population, of course.

By the way, there is already good weather in May. So, choice is not bad.

i giving my best. Poles and Russians need each others and other Slavs needs your combined power as soon as possible before isn`t too late. i rather see my children as part of consolidated Slavic world then as part of some Eurabian global soup

Look it's mister know it all again. FYI: I go regularly to a Polish bakery here in Dubs and I do like some of their breads, I just don't like some of them. And besides, again you failed to see any sarcasm. But that doesn't surprise me one little bit.

I never tried any specific Polish bread, but after each visit to Vilnius I bring with me some Lithuanian (can't remember its name, gray round one)... And a bottles of Trejos devynerios and biciu pikio trauktine. 8-) My friend (Pole living in Lithuania) shown me what really worth to try. ;)
And I always bring from Moscow few bottles of russian cranberry and mountain ash liqueurs (in fact, I don't know how to correctly name it in English - liqeur here is term for very sweet alcoholic drink with a lot of sugar, and this one is not very sweet, but direct translation of the word "tincture" that used here for this kind of drinks look somewhat too pharmaceutical). ;)

Guys, before this turns into a halleluyah political celebration of united Slav-dom: it's just a cultural event, maybe sparked by the recent events, but still pretty a-political imo. Like there are everywhere in the world. I do understand however that this in in the light of Polish - Russian relations is quite extraordinairy, although it also could be that it's not so extraordinairy and that this just goes to show that relations between PL and RU are not that tensed at all as is made believe in this forum at times.

M-G (global village - now really off to bed. Goodnight again)
