these name don't get shorter, but...
Elena - maybe Ela...?
and Michael is Michał

True enough. But then again, someone who is pregnant and thinking about (polish) babynames might find this post interresting :)

You could also chose an international-sounding first name and a Polish sounding (Katarzyna?) middle name. When she gets older she can chose the one she likes the most...

PS. Don't like Katarina - it sounds Russian and reminds me of a certain Russian oppressor...

I've never heard the russian pronunciation of the name Katarina? Here we say the name straight forward (almost Katarzyna) with no rolling R's and a long I :)
