For the Irish I would say undoubtedly, we are closest to the Scottish in many, many ways. Although of course there are differences too.

I've often heard it said that the Poles and Irish are similar and I agree to an extent - I think the Irish are certainly more similar to the Polish than most other Europeans anyway.

Poles and Czechs maybe? (their "funny" language aside!)

I think Poles are far, far friendlier than the Irish!

Well you are entitled to your opinion of course.

Although the rest of the planet would probably disagree with you ; )

(Not that I think Poles are unfriendly that is)

Nationalities you are like - as in resemble, feel similar to.

Maybe I should change the thread title - it's a bit ambiguous.

Ha ha - fair enough - didn't know that!

No idea. I know very little about Hungarians and have only ever met one of them.

Never heard the comparison before though.

Czechs are free market atheists and agnostics, Poles are socialist Catholics.

And you don't think Hungarians are Germans in disguise :)

My vote is Slovak.

The differences are slight.

Actually me too. But it's probably the only nation in the world we have been always having good associations with.

There is a saying: Polak, Węgier dwa bratanki i do tańca i do szklanki ;)
Note that Hungarians are not Slavs.

They are rich as we are (no poorer, no richer like the Czechs), it is said they like fun, they lived in comunistic country...

On the other hand, they were allied with the Nazis and took part in every partition of Poland...

as Austro-Hungarian. Hubsburgs were not Hungarians, were they?
Besides that Austro-Hungarian "occupation" was the least opressive for Poles.

I guess being invaded by all of your neighbors in support of communism kind of puts you into a position of being a bit more subservient. Still, Slovaks seem culturally very close, much more so than other neighbors.

They couldn't have acted without the support of the Hungarian parliament. The Monarchy wasn't absolute.

During the war Winston Churchill said, "The Poles are like the Irish, only more so."

My daughter was friends with a Czech group and even had a Czech boyfriend. She said that Czech's were "a bit arrogant". (is that the German in them?)

As to my favorite group of people, it's got to be Pygmies from Cameroon.

Poles are unique ;D

We're a bit like every Slavic nation, I guess...

There's this traditional friendship between Poland and Hungary:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YJVO6jPaR0

So I guess we're a bit similar.
And the Slovaks, as convex wrote - Slavs, similar language, Catholics...
(but I'm just guessing - I don't know any Slovaks or Hungarians, strangely enough)

convex:
On the other hand, they were allied with the Nazis

Actually judging by what I've read Hungary was better for Poland as an enemy cooperating with the Nazis then the Soviet Union as an "ally" fighting the Nazis, ironically...

convex:
and took part in every partition of Poland...

I think some Poles helped Hungarians during the uprising of 1848.

Funny thing is that, although they are our neighbors, we don't know them at all. We know more about the French or British than them.

Then vs. now is probably an important differentiator.

Do you think the geography of Slovakia played a role in that? Kind an isolated people?

Ha - first time I've heard that! Not sure what to make of it. Sounds more like an insult than anything but was possibly intended as a morale booster.

Finns - that's another group that are supposedly similar to the Irish. No idea myself.

Right, so far a bit of a vote for Poles & Slovaks maybe? Nobody seems to object much to this one...but possibly only because they don't know any Slovaks!

Churchill was referring to how troublesome Poles were during the war; that they wanted this and that and were too concerned with the Soviets.

Jesus Zimmy. How inconsiderate of the Polish - imagine wanting your own land back and on reasonable terms? And those Russians? no need to worry about them Wiktor, not at all - sure what harm can they do?

Ha... I've never thought of it... Mountains comprise more than half of the territory of Slovakia so I guess you're probably right...

I've been there and those are beautiful sights :)

I would vote for Hungarians and Slovaks... Maybe Ukrainians too? I don't know...

We Poles are unique and have most in common with Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, sure with Slavic countries. Don't compare the Irish always with us Poles, we are a completely different country on a very different spot on the globe. We might have just the fondness for drinking in common with the Irishman, they whisky we wódka.
