Let's solve this once and for all the Polish stupid stereotype comes from uneducated peasants going to the west. Who in the Polish countryside in the 20s had any education?

and what kind of people do You think were coming from other countries?exactly the same-poor, very often uneducated with the hopes of a better life. America is a mix of this kind of people. There were steereotypes(often nasty)about many nationalities, but the dumb Pollack jokes started in the 40s not sooner, and it did start with hollywood, even during the war Poles were pictured as bad characters

From the west believing false NAzi propaganda. I know the Irish who came to America were also called 'dumb Micks' the Italians 'dumb Dago' but it was worse for Poles because Poles knowingly and self willingly 'locked' themselves in ghettos and didn't socialize with other ethnicities. If you're the only person on your block who doesn't talk to your neighbors you'll be the outcast and will be talked about no matter what your background may be.

I live in an Italian & Irish neighborhood in NEw York. Poles are WAY more Intelligent than Italians & Irish people.

The Polish college graduate rate is as high as 36 percent.

While the Irish & Italian college graduate rate is like 20 - 22 percent

Alot of the more Intelligent ethnicities actually stayed more with their own. East Asians & Ashkenazi Jews who have very high iq's like Poles also stayed to themselvesi n their own neighborhoods more than others.

I think because alot of the time Smart people don't want to get in trouble by going beyond their means. Also I think smart people want to seem smart so they want to avoid being made stupid if they can't speak perfect English.

Plus, I think sometimes it is just an Arrogance that more Intelligent groups like Poles, Asians & Jews feel they are too smart to deal with other groups.

Even though I was born in America I kind of feel that way. I tend to feel I am far too smart to deal with alot of these semi retarded Irish & Italian people we have here.

Poles, Asians & Jews

You may be right about that one, Jews and Asians are also mocked by the lower classes.

Wrong. Hollywood raved about Poles untill the Soviet union got involved in the war in 41(blah blah"but 1939 they invaded Po......) and the left leaning script writers turned their praise on the plucky soviets, dropping the "plucky" Pole as a stock player....name a single hollywood movie rom the war years that paints Poles as bad people,go on.

I had gone out with a friend one evening. We were at a club, both interested in chatting with the same guy. He had started a conversation with us, eventually asking about our ethnicity. When it was my turn to speak she blurted out, "My friend is a pollock." I suppose she did it to divert his attention from me, trying to make him believe I'm dumb. To her surprise, my being Polish had started a more interesting conversation with him. He had graduated from Harvard University. Many of his former classmates were Polish, graduating with highest honors :)

You are absolutely correct...I am actually Russian...And yes, I hate Jews, but yet I don't hate them enough for your taste....

No I don't hate Jews in general like you do. If I did I would hate a part of myself. I only criticize bad Jews just like I praise good Jews.

You never say anything good about Jews.

they would have a lighted pathway until the generator was fixed.

As usual Ivan you sound like a moron.

Of course you won't make any jokes about Russians despite the fact there are tons of videos about drunk/stupid/backward Russians out there.

I doubt Poles "locked themselves in ghettos and didn't socialize with other ethnicities" to make themselves "outcasts" more then anyone else. Even if they did, its doubtful that prompted the racist jokes about Polish people when they were at their peak in the 70's.

Yeah I'm sure Polish Americans were frantically locking themselves into ghettos in the 70's more than everyone else, when anti-Polish bigotry and Polish-Bashing jokes was at its peak in America LOL. No all the anti-Polish slurs/jokes heard in the 1970's that sounded just like Archie Bunker's anti-Polish slurs seen by 40 million people a week had nothing to do with these anti-Polish slurs going on in America at that time. LOL Also all the anti-Polish jokes told by Americans in the 70's, that sounded just like the anti-Polish jokes by Late night NBC-TV Bigots was also a coincidence as well.

Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid?

People may get the wrong impression by observing people such as Pat Sajak. I recall, he had once referred to an animal of the reptile species, as an amphibian.

What does that mean?

So if somebody of Polish ancestry makes a mistake its because "he has inferior intelligence" but when others make a similar mistake (and more often) their ancestry is not an issue?

Those in the media who have pushed the inferior intelligence stereotype about Poles would have had a field day if they chose to use that same standard with half of the countries in the world that happen to be third world.

During the 1920s, Polish workers in America didn't have common sense when it came to doing certain tasks and that's one of the reasons why Polish people were stereotyped as being stupid.

Sorry, hope I haven't offended any Pat Sajak fans...

So if somebody of Polish ancestry makes a mistake its because "he has inferior intelligence"

Of course this isn't the case. Bloopers are made on television all the time. With millions of viewers they are easily noticed.

In modern Poland, common sense is often elusive.

I don’t think this is about offending or not offending Pat Sajak fans. I personally am neutral on him. I don’t really watch him.

I’m just a little confused why you brought up a mistake Sajak made to suggest as an answer to “Stereotypes of Polish people as stupid”. Which by the way is a Nazi stereotype of Polish people.

Of course this isn't the case. Bloopers are made on television all the time. With millions of viewers they are easily noticed.

This is true. So I’m a little confused why you brought up an example of a blooper of Pat Sajak to somehow answer “Stereotypes of Polish people as stupid” when people of all ethnic backgrounds make bloopers.

In modern Poland, common sense is often elusive.

Common sense is mostly elusive with the Lefties and Enemy Within of Poland. But to be fair, there are some regular Poles who failed to have common sense for allowing so many Leftists and Enemy Within types to live in Poland.

Tell me, MediaWatch - you don't speak Polish, so what do you know about this alleged 'Enemy Within'?

For instance, why not tell us who you think this enemy is? I'm curious - names would be appreciated?

I mean - if you know about it, and you don't speak Polish - they must be pretty well known in the English speaking world. So - who are they?

So who are 'the enemy within' and is lining your baseball cap with alumunium foil really effective against them?

LOL!!

Holy cow! Within MINUTES of my post of the "Enemy Within" living in Poland, and LO and BEHOLD, guess who immediately responds to it???

Speak of the devil!!!

As for me "not speaking Polish" you and I have already went around and around and around on this already. I speak some Polish while you speak just 25 words of Polish. OK maybe its up to 27 words of Polish you know now LOL And you supposedly live in Poland.

As for the Enemy Within in Poland, once again I already spoke about this and if I'm not mistaken you dedicated a topic to this interesting issue. Hmmmm I wonder why? LOL

Where did the stereotype polish people are stupid come from.

Never heard of this before...vodka drinkers.. yes, heard that....hard workers ...yep, heard that too.....not heard of them being stupid though.

honey, the II world war was happening till 1945 so what I said is relevant, I am aware that soviet propaganda has much to do about it, also antisemitic occurences in 1968 Poland fueled this bad depiction of Poles

Yes politics going against the Polish people by people in the media, prompted part of the Polish-Bashing back then.

Never heard of this before...vodka drinkers.. yes, heard that....hard workers ...yep, heard that too.....not heard of them being stupid though.

I virtually never hear it either. Maybe its because I deal with normal people in my daily life who aren't prejudice against anyone.

Virtually the only times I hear these jokes against Polish people, is by Polish-haters here on the internet.

honestly, hasn't that stereotype passed by now? i mean, does anyone even say this anymore? "Dumb Poles"??? nobody takes that seriously anymore, do they?

As far as I can tell, the only people bringing it up are right-wingers who identify with Poland and who try to use it as an excuse for their own racism/homophobia/etc. It's the same on this forum - you can see quite obviously who the racists are, because they try and claim that people are racist towards them.

Those LPR lot in Poland often bring it up, but no-one takes them seriously.

Polonophobia exists only in the mind.

Among normal Americans this anti-Polish stereotype has largely passed.

You might only hear it sometimes from insecure/unsophisticated Americans. But in that case you just consider the source. But its definitely not in the mainstream media like it was decades ago.

.. nonsense. Typecasting a whole nation is just wrong. For example, a lot of Poles I know are dab hands at DIY. They can find solutions and can think abstractly/out of the box.

I really love when I see Polish intel. Some of the smartest people I've met are Polish. Yeah, some lower the standard but I prefer to see it as 'my friend, who just happens to be from Poland btw'. I don't see their nationality, I see their character and ingenuity.

Should be PF rule 21 but it seems to be an international sport.

I second that. You should watch 'Matura to Bzdura'. Wow, the guy just said it after I typed it. 'Polish people have this way of speaking Polish', LOL. No sh*t! I must always pinch myself as a reminder that I teach educated Poles privately. Even many of my school students are smart but I have seen spectacular insight here. The stupid ones are often from the villages or from the hooligan communities.

... this is funny. This is one side of the Poles I don't like and I see it when they play football. Now, while I'm quite relaxed about things and enjoy a laugh, some often don't know when to be serious. On the footie pitch, they are too dithery and don't know when to knuckle down. I stay quiet quite a bit but sometimes I tell them what I think of them. Not too forcefully as it's just a game but loose stupidity is sth I don't like. The schadenfreude and lack of realisation of potential harm to others is evident in the video. Still, I reiterate that it's one type of Pole that's this way. I know many sensible types that would shun them in the same way.

I think the stereotype started in World War II when Poland tried to fight German tanks with Cavalry (horses). Needless to say, Poland was taken in mere hours. This is why people say Polish people are stupid.

False. They never did that. Also - Poland was the country who fought the longest before having to surrender.

The anti Polish propaganda started with the Nazis and the Soviets. It was part of Hitler's hate through humor campaign. The goal was to show Germany and Germans as racially and culturally superior and the poles as inferior and barbaric. Some of this propaganda got into the US via communist sympathizers working in Hollywood. The Nazis then went and systematically killed all of the educated class of Poles...some 2.5 million non-Jewish Poles and later 3 million Jewish Poles. The Soviets killed them or removed them from their homes and deported them to far off Russian outposts...so at that time very few of the educated Poles were left alive. Poland was many times in its history a powerful and influential nation and after being conquered by their enemies were kept partitioned and occupied for over 120 years to prevent them from returning to their former power and glory.
