Here is my contribution to the subject with a hint of irony. :

here are top 5 rules for a polish driver

1 - never give the right-of-way to any vehicle, bicyclist, or pedestrian in the intersection.and never let another vehicle to get into your lane from a minor road

2 - always surpass every vehicle which drives in front of you even if you are only 100 m before the intersection , you have to be the first at the red light to show to everybody how fast you can start at the green .

3 - always be a king of the road, pedestrians especially elderly , children , pregnant women at all times have to run away when they cross the street

4 - always put the pedal to the metal

5 - always keep in mind that speed limits are only for jerks

What do you know? Have you ever been to Poland?

Just for your pleasure Mike, living in PL over ten years enough ?
I dress like a bum, got loads of dosh and laugh when I get cold shouldered because fools think I haven,t two cents to rub together. When they detect my accent, they swarm after me like flies on 5hit. Funny don,t you think ?

1. You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you.

You should be yourself and never try to be anyone else to please people. Just be friendly towards people who are trying to be friendly towards you, and if someone doesn't like you: Too bad! (We're not married, are we?)

warszawski:
2. A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.

I'm sure you've noticed the recession and the increasing unemployment rates, so it's actually pretty shallow and ignorant to call people boring just because they've lost their jobs. You'd do well to remember that people who don't have a job can contribute and give colour to this world just as well, albeit in a different way. I agree that in a perfect world, everyone should have something to do, but of course this world isn't always perfect.

warszawski:
3. Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they're walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.

I usually do, but I *do* make exceptions. I mean, would you open the door for a little ***** who only just yesterday was trying to stir up a fight between her boyfriend and yourself? (I'm sorry, but I would slam that door in her face and hope she breaks her ******* nose!)

warszawski:
4. Don't be pretentious

..like putting up the best version of yourself?

;)

warszawski:
or judge people by their background.

..like calling jobless people boring?

;)

warszawski:
5. A man should never wear shorts in the city.

Unless it's blazing hot during the Summer.

warszawski:
Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

Hey, if you like wearing your flip-flops then you should wear your flip-flops.

:)

It is quite hilarious that you would even consider I would suggest Tom Ford's rules are for Polish men only. This is a forum about all things Polish. Therefore we should try and keep to the theme. Get out of that high saddle George8600.

I'd have to say that a top 5 for a Pole would be completely different than a top 5 for an expat.

Expat Top 5 Rules:

1. If you're not going to learn the language and learn it well, plan on going back home in 3 years or less. Living in a country for years and years without being able to speak to anyone who can't speak your language as well as relying on skype and phone calls from people back home to be your social network is a pathetic existence. How long can you continue to have your girlfriend/wife be your spokesperson for virtually every single matter that involves verbal interaction? After a few years of that, you start feeling like less than a man, more like a little boy too afraid to talk to strangers.

2. Don't sling your meat into anything without taking all precautions. It can make your eventual exit strategy from Poland MUCH more complicated.

3. Avoid teaching English if possible. The pay isn't bad but the work hours suck and overall dependability of students and schools are poor which keeps you wondering every month if you're going to have any money to pay the next month's bills. If you can get a steady job that allows you to finish work at a reasonable hour as well as weekends off, then do it! Most of you will not stay there forever so enjoy your time in Poland instead of walking for miles and hopping trams and buses all week long through all hours of the day and night trying to scrum together enough lessons every week to earn a living. Every ESL newbie does it and by the time you get yourself together, make an easier schedule for yourself.....a year or two has passed and you're already thinking of leaving.

4. Live in a big city or you'll go mad, especially if you don't speak Polish. Oh, and for those of you who think "well if I go to a small city, less people will speak English so I'll be forced to learn Polish and I'll learn it much faster....".......uhmmm.....stop thinking that.

5. Learn to cook basic meals and like it. You'll save a lot of money on food in Poland if you shop at the supermarkets and cook basic Polish dishes every day. Eating out is horribly expensive in Poland and for the young expat looking to enjoy himself, travel and maybe get some strange here and there, you'll have more money to spend on that.

Ha, my top 5 for a Pole would simply get far too much backlash. I think I'll stay away.

No shorts and flip flops in humid weather? I'd hate to see your disgusting feet. Bleh.

Discrimination is ok to an extent. Gotta protect whats yours.

It's not welcome here.

If you want to discriminate, keep it in America.

well ok.... let's put it that way... yes, in Poland it may be not acceptable, but in some other places it is... as they say, you can spot a foreigners/tourists by their clothing... no, i wouldn't wear in Poland what i wear in TX...
but still, no flip flops during hot humid summer is miserable...

How about top 5 rules for driving:

1. never give anybody right of way unless they have it
2. shout kurwa at other drivers with every opportunity
3. only stop at cross roads if the police are around
4. never abide by the speed limit
5. break hard at every opportunity, especially at red lights when people are crossing the road

And a few more that I want to add based from my own experience of living in Poland

6. Accellerate hard through traffic lights, 5 seconds after they have turned red
7. Tail gate the car infornt of you waiting for the first opportunity to overtake
8. When brow of hill, blind corner etc arrives, accellerate hard keeping as close to the overtaken car as possible
9. Pull in, break hard. Then indicate that you want to turn right
10. Think that towing children on sledges from your 4x4 (SUV) is a 'safe thing to do'
11. When other car breaks down / has a puncture, don't offer to help, hoot and swear at the person fixing their car. (happened to me on a flyover in Warsaw. Many drivers swore at me, not one single offer to help)

and finally

12. Refuse to believe that Polands appalling road fatality rate (one of the worst in Europe) has anything to do with the driving standards. Insist that Poles are wonderful drivers.

Sorry if it is a bit harsh, but this is based on my experience of living there

LOL the daddy of all being, if somebody has a foreign registered car, over take at all costs.
Ohh and when driving in any county other than Poland on a PL registered car, drive like a lunatic to prove how skillful you are.

Mark76:
9. Pull in, break hard. Then indicate that you want to turn right

Thats a good one

My take on the top 5 rules for driving in Poland:

1. Keep in mind that speed limits are to be considered minimums.
2. The sight of taillights is a challenge to your manhood. Pass at any cost.
3. The older, more decrepit your car, the faster you must drive.
4. If possible, park in a way that will block both pedestrian and auto traffic.
5. Extra points are awarded for giving your passenger a heart attack.
