What;s the deal with Nergal, the singer from Behemoth.

Got an email yersterday form a friend back home asking was it true that he's got leukemia,
It's terrible news if it's true, it's note really my type of music, although some of their songs are really good, but he seems like a decent enough lad.

Nergal is a highly articulate guy who comes across very well in interviews. His English is superb! Yes, I think he has leukaemia :( :( People can bounce back from it but God has to be on their side. Singing what he does, I doubt he will be but fingers crossed.

From their site:

The following excerpt is a statement from BEHEMOTH’s frontman and guitarist Nergal regarding his health and the canceling of upcoming tour dates.

“Dear All, I’d like to announce that Behemoth won’t be able to tour for the foreseeable future. I don’t wanna bore you with details here, but I’m sick and am receiving some serious medical treatment. It’s gonna take another few weeks or more for full recovery, and so we have been forced to cancel all the Behemoth shows in August, planned dates in Russia and Baltic States for September and October, and our American tour in November. I know how much it sucks but health comes first. I can assure all of you that when we return, I’ll be stronger than death, and we’ll reschedule every tour as soon as logistics allow. I feel good and strong, my mind is focused, I've got my loving woman by my side, my band mates, friends (never thought there are so many, haha), management, agents and label people are giving me massive support. I can’t ask for more but a little patience now. The fact that we won’t be touring for the next few months doesn’t mean we’ll hibernate. Behemoth will be active on several other levels. In upcoming days you can expect the premiere of our newest video, ‘Alas, Lord Is Upon Me’ which is by far the sickest fuckin’ thing we’ve ever done! The Evangelia Heretika DVD is coming out as scheduled in November this year. Also, check out our Webstore that opens for international markets in upcoming weeks. This is it for now. Stay tuned!”

You're talking about one of the most popular Polish exports. A lot of people care.

Plus they put on a damn good show.

Nergal is far more charismatic and articulate than most I see here. There is a Youtube interview of him being interviewed in Nottingham and his English is virtually flawless. I don't like his music but his self expression is clear.

One or two of his tracks are ok. It's just not my style. I can listen to guitar licks in symphonic black metal but not growling. I know them through my wife, she's into BM.

Impeccable for a non-native speaker of English :)

I'm sure he was popular when he ripped up a bible, I certainly don't have a high estimation, I wonder what would happen to someone in Iran if they ripped up the Koran! He should learn to respect other peoples beliefs and not insult religion.

He's Polish, he took a stand. He did what was expected of him in terms of not sitting on the fence. He, like me, rejects the labelling culture that is prevalent here. Listen to part 1 of the interview I posted above. Tell me, Karl, how is it in any way realistic that 95% of a country can somehow agree with the dictates of one strand of Christianity at the expense of the logic of the other ones? Poland is just a sheep culture and is full of sticker people. I'm glad that Scotland has more of a balance between Protestants and Catholics although they don't think enough either. All smart Poles have told me the same. Latvians seem to have the idea too, they aren't overly conditioned.

Most people being Catholic, Protestant or Atheist don't think just fallow whatever the they feel they should.
Cultural cultural diversity is a killer of society unity.

My point is, belief and faith, IS. Don't condition people into thinking anything, give them the info and then let them choose. Unity is just the extension of the sticker culture. Where is the UNDERSTANDING? Listen to what Nergal said, he said it well :)

Stick out, believe in sth because you believe in it, not because sb tells you that you should!

You are a blind conformist then? How is being Orthodox or Protestant a major stray? They are still believers in Jesus Christ, the man who sacrificed himself for us all.

I know that most people don't have a need or time or ability to make decisions or think for themselves - they just follow !

So, you are prepared to kill to defend ideals which you were told to follow by bandwagon jumping? That's about the stretch of it!

Black metal as a genre shows as much respect to religion as religion has shown to humanity. That is why religion is treated with utter contempt, and it's a sentiment I can agree with.

I've also found musicians from the metal genre (such as Varg Vikernes and Gaahl) to be far more articulate in expressing their thoughts than musicians who play, for example, jazz.

Behemoth (and genre-mates Vader) are one of the few Polish exports I'd heard of before I moved here, and I'd like to believe that Poles will show as much solidarity for Nergal as they've done for other Poles in tragic circumstances.

Religion isn't about killing? Then go and tell that to those Islamists that kill in the name of Allah. Jihad is Holy War and it's a doctrine.

Anyway, Nergal rejected the badge culture. It's a shortcut to thinking.

Nergal philosophises a lot. He is candid in his commentary. I like the fact that he is an independent thinker and isn't afraid to state it as he sees it.

Well, I don't know enough about Isalmists to enter into serious discussion about Jihad:/
However Christian are not about killing!

Nergal is opportunist at best and Satanist at worst .....
Do not fool yourself Sean, he do not prompt people to thinking, he suck them into his own philosophy, those who are his followers are just that - new badge bearers!
Most people just follow and that is that!

Doesn't mean he is right, and because you agree with him, its doesn't make him right

Take Adolf Hitler, a Catholic.

He was a freak not Catholic, are you Protestant because you were born one?no!
There plenty of those who just stick with a badge but not necessary are of any worth, there good sheep, black sheep and stray sheep:)
Seanus:
Plenty of Orthodox and Catholic killers there

Well, generatively and theoretically Christianity is not about killing but all those tribal cultures made some impact on practical side of things but don't blame religion if anything Orthodoxes and Catholic's do temper bad tendencies.
Seanus:
No, he encourages free thinking. He lets people draw their own conclusions and doesn't thrust it on them.

Most people are incapable of drawing their own conclusions and that is the crux of the matter. They are just suck into new badge bearers circle and they follow, they thing- hey is new and original and so clever (I'm so original and clever)- but in fact there are specific kind of sheep - suckers :)

I don't know if you agree, but for me Christianity or better catholic church is one of the most aggressive ones.
They have still their missionaries running all over the world and conquering "lost or stranded souls"...and that did not start recently. ;-)
