Once it got to overtime, it was anybody's game - if the Americans had managed to get a breakaway, I'd have bet good money on them scoring on it. In fact, during the game, the Americans were actually much faster - just look at how the Canadians defended in the 3rd period to see that it really was speed vs stick handling.

Thanks, this is all I was saying too.

I have never seen Canadians so emotional lol.

I noticed that also..its good for your country they needed that spark and sense of national pride in hockey to be restored;)

Like I said before most these players are in the NHL, they all know each other and play against each other all the time.

It seemed like a NHL all star game to me?

Congrats Canada, you won the Gold fair n square:)

I really dislike the fact that overtime isn't 'to a finish' -

Its like American football the first team that scores in overtime wins

I would of liked it better if they played the whole 20 minutes and stayed tied, then had a shoot out!!!

But thats the rules and they arent gonna change them now,,,Canada won so be it:)

I was thinking, It really isn't fair that the EU gets to have multiple teams and poor little America only gets one. I mean, you guys get to have multiple teams even though you are one country. Don't you think American states should be able to field individual teams? Just wondering. :)

Ugh, don't get me started on American Football's OT rules. There is something absolutely ridiculous about the way that winning the coin toss gives you such a huge advantage - and why the NFL can't see this is entirely beyond me. Many a good game has been ruined by this - especially when they score without giving up possession.

I'm not even sure why OT in American Football simply isn't done in exactly the same way as baseball - give each team one drive each. If scores are equal after each drive has finished, then carry on - to a clear winner.

I'm not a fan at all of penalty shots/kicks/whatever - they work in regular season matches, but in playoffs, the winner should be decided in open play, not via penalties. Some of the greatest games in sport have spanned multiple OT periods, and that's the way it should be.

Ideally, we would have OT periods where the winner at the end of the period wins the game, rather than sudden death, but alas, TV networks would never allow it. This game today shows where it would work nicely though - who would bet against the Americans connecting with a 3rd goal?

Exactly,,play the whole quarter, what team has ever declined a kick off coin toss?
That part does seem unfair, if the hockey game went on for a full period we might of won?

Baseball can go into long 17-20 innings, not usually but it happens sometimes.

You mean strange places like Ukraine

Hi there from a strange place ;)
Wonderful game, but, frankly I enjoyed much more Slovaks - much more determination and will to win. In overtime Canadians showed the class: speed, total control and unceasing attack. Canadians were simply stronger. After scoring two goals Canucks relaxed and went more into defense, but later came back and were victorious :)

No, US team was stronger - that's why it won. Today, it was the other way around. Both teams were amazing. They all are champions and deserve the best.

Funny, but when we won the first game, Canadians (and many others here too) were saying that it was all luck and determination but no one said it was the skills, lol.

The above is obviously a lie.
Not trying to downgrade the US team at all. I am trying not to give credit where little credit is due. Canadians could play better, which they showed in the last minutes of the game. Americans had a great game, a very determined and dynamic team. The better ones usually win, and that's what happened yesterday.

source.

The same thing happened today. The better team won.

Canadians hate Americans.. everybody knows that. Who cares let them have this. They were the top seed.. they were supposed to win, right? Still took an overtime.

You cannot judge what team is better when a match/game is played for so long and one final point scores it. Same in football/soccer 0-1, basketball where it's 88-90 etc...

Congratulations to the Canadians on winning the one gold they really wanted above all others and also for laying on a good Olympics. Despite the few hitches in administrative matters and the tragic death of the young Luge competitor in training the Canadians laid on a superb Games and the people really embraced the spirit and made every visitor feel welcome. Many more people will now know what a lovely city Vancouver is.

My closing thoughts are twofold:

Firstly I wish I had bought shares in the company(ies) making those red mittens because I could probably have retired on the proceeds.

Secondly, I think the Canadian Hockey team missed a trick last night. They should have emulated their women counterparts and stayed on to party on the ice. To complete the role reversal they could have sipped Babycham and laid on a demonstration of synchronised dressmaking.

I thought the Canadians were just a little bit better than the Americans, great game.

They did excellent to top the medal table as well.

I am sure many had different reasons, I was glad that we won, but winning over US makes the victory even sweeter.

good idea but after women's team was criticized they decided to play low;). It appears that there is PC about celebrating these days- very silly IMO.

3 of them will be coming back to play here in Chicago, Towes the Canadian that scored the first goal is one of our best players.

Were in first place in our division!!!!!

This game was nothing more than a NHL all pro night, I like it better when only amateurs we allowed to play in the Olympics not all paid professionals.

Im sure the Russians were mad when they lost..lol

The summer olympics became games for the blackies....(the muscles- and running competitions that is, the technicals are still much more for whities)

Of course countries with more blackies fare better! :(

well, US earn Silver - not so bad either :) Congratulations to US!!

Disappointing finish, but hey Canada did have more talent. Love Olympic Hockey. If the NHL would eliminate 7 teams we could have a better result rather than the watered down version we have now.
