Given that JPII played international rugby for Poland, it seems that you don't know much about Poland!

Wonders will never cease.

Mind you, I bet it was the wrong code - it's hard to imagine him rolling in mud somewhere like Castleford or Pontefract.

so rugby is a popular sport in Poland? As someone who plays for one of the high-profile expatriate teams I can tell you the exact opposite. It has a core following, much like say show-jumping or trampolining has back in the United Kingdom. Rugby would not even come close to the top ten sports in Poland, but I await you to pull some fantastic statistics on whichever weird forums you lurk around on.

Not easy to buy. A few years back I had to get mine delivered from Canada! Then O'Brien sports took over, but I heard they've gone bust. They are still claiming to be the official supplier though.

The IRB say that there are 58 clubs Poland and that the national team is ranked 38 in the world (some 31 places above their soccer counterparts). Are you aware that there is a world outside the expat bubble?

Also, have you ever seen trampolining live on British TV? I've seen six nations games live on Polish TV (they're all on). Care to comment?

Your point is... pointless. comparing rugby with soccer is pointless. Rugby is a closed shop; who will you see doing well in the world cup: the traditional powers. The rest, have no hope. Soccer on the other hand varies with its power shifts. Greece winning Euro 2004 has no rugby equivalent.

Soccer, by the fact it's played by more people in more countries will always have enjoy more fluid shifts in power. Poland may well have a future once more, especially if Euro 2012 has a knock-on effect on the grass roots game. The Polish football side were positive heavyweights on the world soccer stage for a good fifteen years, they could well achieve those heights once more - who knows. The rugby side has never been a heavyweight, and never shall.

You mention there are 58 rugby sides in Poland. That's only about 30 more rugby teams than there are American Football teams; not a huge difference, especially when one considers the numbers of players needed to field a rugby side, and the numbers to make a American Football team. Does that mean American Football too, is ready to be called a popular sport? You have clearly gone stark crazy.

As for watching six nations games on Polish TV; Polish TV is a strange creature. I don't understand the point. I remember once watching Barnsley v Hull televised on Polsat. Does that mean Barnsley and Hull are both popular in Poland? I think not.

I don't know - the Pumas look stronger and stronger every year. Fair enough, they've made a hell of an effort to get where they are, but it is definitely possible for someone else to break in from outside. Even Italy - they're now at the point where they can be confident of beating (sorry to use this) Scotland or Wales on any given Sunday. That's from a position of being the whipping boys in the Six Nations - so it can definitely be done.

Bear in mind that there are oddities in sport - look at how Poland dominates Speedway, and how the salaries are actually higher in Poland than in the UK now for the sport. Poland being competitive at rugby isn't completely unimaginable, but it would take a lot of determination and focus to get there.

I'm actually surprised Poles haven't taken to it though - it's a winter sport and it's physical.

Of course, the one thing that holds back Poland is the way that idiotically, the country has little to **** all interest in developing sport :(

No, I said that there are 58 clubs. Each club has, on average, more than 100 registered players.

incidentally, you'd be interested to know that a Q&A on the Vatican website actually once put the pope rumour to bed. As, indeed, a rumour and no more. Where did you get your incorrect information from. Oh, I know. A google of Poland Rugby Shirt leads to worldrugbyshop.com, whose one contribution to Polish rugby culture (which we've now deduced is larger than football), is a suit-all-sport scarf, and an erroneous rumour about the Pope.

Keep trying.

And Harry, do you not find it strange that the Pope exhibition in Krakow makes plenty of mention of his sporting feats yet skirts the fact he represented his country at rugby? That no mention of this appears in his biography. Or even on the Polish Rugby Union site?

The amount of misinformation you have garnered from the internet is frightening. Even more so are the amount of people who fall for your mis-truths. Whether they are intentional or not I will leave for others to decide. Frankly I'm starting to believe you are a will-o-wisp personally employed by Polish Forums to act as devils advocate to stir life into threads. I can see no other reason why you have not been banned and quartered.

rugbysklep.pl, it is a new site and still in development by the looks but it does have the Polish Rugby shirt. The link is from the Polish Rugby Unions website. By the way I come from New Zealnd and wouldn't call it a "silver-spoon" sport where I am from Smurf.

I played Fullback, Outside Centre and Scrum half at various times during my Rugby days (positions for little fella's - had to give up in favour of the Boxing.) Got talking to my Dentist who was asking me how I'd managed to incur the big scar under my chin (I was kicked in the face during a game) who duly informed me plays Rugger and says there is a strong following which is growing slowly but surely.

I'm not surprised - it's the kind of sport that I can imagine Poles being interested in - it's fast, tough and accessible to all.
