I have a soft spot for this girl - I remember her father imploring 'Karolinko' in a changeover break to 'think positively' as she was being slaughtered by one of the Williams sisters a couple of years ago.

Pretty enough while not outstanding, it was the father-daughter exchange in Polish which touched me - the Eurosport commentator said, "I wish I could understand what they're saying!"

I can't stand her being called "Woz-knee-ackee" though. Ugh!

Then again look, Poland is a free country (just like Denmark), why isn't she playing for Poland?

The English pronunciation of Agnieska Radwasnksa is pretty annoying too.

Wozniacki is the daughter of Polish immigrants, Piotr and Anna Wozniacki

I hope she doesnt turn out to be another Safina, World no:1 but no major title, i haven't seen her play yet, I think Kim Cljsters will take the Ozzy Open title.

Because she is a Danish tennis player. Why would she?

This is exactly what I meant, she obviously feels more Danish than Polish otherwise she'd be playing for Poland.

Or maybe she's just realistic and knows, that she'll have better conditions in Denmark?

Most of the time people feel like wherever it's more profitable to feel like. Angelique Kerber a German tennis player from a mixed Polish/German family feels more Polish and wants to change her citizenship. http://www.zimbio.com/Angelique+Kerber/articles/2/Angelique+Kerber+fee l+more+Polish+German

I know, unfortunitely for some people, the profit is all that matters. They would sell their souls just to make some quick cash.

the sooner the better, she feels Polish so let her be Polish. No one should be forced to any citizenship.

I'm not saying that you'd play for a country that gives you more money, but maybe she feels equally connected with both countries and in that situation she just choose the one that gives her better opportunities.

Or more accurately, being Danish is good for sponsorship, but being Polish isn't so much.

Apparently, Karolina's parents were sporting types who left Poland around the time of martial law. She was born in Denmark, so perhaps it's not surprising that she plays as a Dane.

Oh "Wozniacki" does not sound so bad. To me it shows me she doesn't shorten her name because she is proud of her Polish ancestry. I have seen much tougher names to pronounce.

But like you I have a soft spot for her too. She's such a nice girl. She has a lot of class and is as tough as nails.

She will be playing tonight 9:30PM Eastern US time. It should be a good match.

Clijsters and Zvonera will be playing after her which will be a good match.

Its interesting to see that 2 of the 8 girls who made it to the quarterfinals are of Polish ancestry.

guesswho:

Because she is doing the right thing and showing loyalty to the country she lives in.

I am proud of my Polish ancestry, but first and foremost I am loyal and proud of my American roots first and foremost since I was born in America. Everyone should be loyal first to the country they live in.

Did you see Agnieska Radwanska play Clijster’s last night? Everyone thought Clijsters was going to destroy Radwanska but Radwanska was giving Clijsters a war. Radwanska almost won the second set with Clijsters. In my book, anybody who can go toe to toe with Clijsters is a very good player.

Good for Radwanska. She’s only 20 so I predict she will be winning some big tournaments in a couple years especially if she plays the way she did against Clijsters who some think is actually the world number 1 female tennis player. I saw what Clijsters did to the Williams sisters and nobody but an exceptional tennis athlete can do what she did to them.

I think its best when people are loyal and proud firstly to the country they were born in and grew up in and live in.

I am proud of my Polish ancestry, but I was born in America, live in America and therefore I am most proud of being American.

Na Li's knocked out Wozniacki, I thought she might, an unseeded player just wreaking havoc amongst the seasoned pro's. That's a shame.

Clijsters was having an off day though, i still pick her for the title.

Murrays in with a shout for the mens, especially in the unlikely event that Djokovic beats Federrer.

Surely there are other Polish surnames that English speakers find tougher to pronounce correctly, but that is beside the point when her name is never pronounced correctly by any English speaking tennis announcer that I have ever heard.

What is the big deal here? The girl is Danish, and the fact she speaks some Polish, does that mean she has to play in Polish colours?
Anyway she will never ever get past our Flemish Kim Clijsters :))

Both her parents are 100% Polish, Denmark has made her a great tennis player so work that out.

I read somewhere that she wants Serbian citizenship, she wants to play for Serbia! Not Germany - HA

He certainly did, he has the better of Federrer now, so if Murray gets passed ferrer (which he should) tomorrow morning. Then Djokovic Vs Murray, i suspect Murray will lose.

without the Williams sisters (both injured), it looks like Clijsters doesn't have much competition at all (unless on a bad day).

Jealous? 767564, those are the numbers! He simply played smart and powerful, just like B Becker in the old times. ;-)
No matter who will be the opponent in the final, he has a clear shot a the title. ;-)

Exactly. Mama. In my personal opinion the female tennis is close to professional sport maybe in the top 30 of WTA list. The others are Hausfrauentennis...
Cljisters is a nice exeption to that rule ;-) She's very good.
Sorry that Enin left the circus. Even though being short, just 5ft1in, she was a finesse player with a super one-handed backhand.

Williams sisters

I remember tiny little Martina Hingis taking them both out of tournaments, she said it was always hard playing them both in the same tournament.

Hingis reached her fifth consecutive Australian Open final in 2001, defeating both of the Williams sisters en route, before losing to Jennifer Capriati.

Hingis was similar to Federrer just absolute raw talent.
