delphiandomine: Sadly, she never would have reached #1 in the world in Poland as a Pole. Not because of sponsors, or anything else - but simply because Poland's attitude towards sport is very much behind the West :( (personally, the American approach is what we should all be striving for)
That may be about Poland.
But you never know. Give it time.
Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland is ranked number 9 in the world and I've seen her hang in there with the top tennis players like Clijsters, Wozniacki and some of the great Russian tennis players.
That's nothing to sneeze at.
But you're right, maybe it would be good to strive for the American approach when it comes to tennis.
But I don't think the Danish, Serbian, Russian or German approach would be so bad either given the great tennis players from those countries.
The number one mens tennis player today is the Slav/Serbian Djokovic
