Dirk Nowicki (Nowitski) is leading the Dallas Mavericks against the Miami Monkeys/Heat in the NBA finals this year...We have quite a diveristy in this Dallas organization, as the owner is Jewish (Mark Cuban), Nowicki is a Polack from Germany, and we also have the usual mix of African-Americans on the squad...This should appeal to PF 'diversifists'...What say ye?

Dirk Nowicki (Nowitski)

You re-Polonized his surname correctly but he spells it with a 'z' not an 's'.

If he was Polish, his parents would be in trouble, given that Poles are not allowed to be called Dirk. Although his grandparents would also have been in trouble, seeing as they named his parents Helga and Jorg-Werner.

Oh and he plays for the German national team, just as his father did.

Why?...It's a good name!

BTW, European players have done quite well in the NBA: There have been Croats, Serbs, Lithuanians, Poles and others...Curiously, one of the greatest Philadelphia 76ers/NBA players, Alan Iverson is now playing in Istanbul...Iverson is a shoo-in Hall of Famer, but he tried to have his wife killed, and the NBA quietly gave him the boot...He is apparently happy playing in Turkey....The climate is something like his native Virginia Beach, Virginia in the USA.

Polish citizens are only allowed to use approved names: neither Dirk nor Helga nor Jorg-Werner are on that list.

Also, if you have to Polonise somebody's name, they most probably aren't a Pole.

Why you lie?...Approved names??!!

Question is, Nowicki has Polish surname: Do Poles appreciate his talent and recognize him?

I have a surname of Greek origin. So according to you, am I a Greek or should I feel some special connection to them?
And should we Germans feel embaressed for Anthony Weiner? He clearly has a German surname name after all.

Dirk may feel German and his paternal ancestors may have all felt German for umpteenth generations but the fact remains that his surname indicates that he almost certainly had a Polish ancestor. So in his case it cannot be clearly either/or but rather probably both. Of course there is the possibility that a male German orphan was adopted by some Nowicki's and was given their surname before founding Dirk's patrilineal line, in which case he would be totally krizzout krauted izzout.

Never heard of eternal Poles? With a Polish name you are a Pole, even if your Polish ancestor lived 500 years ago. Only something really bad, like several Nazis in the family, can release you from this blessing, but great fame of a individual revives the Polishness. ;)

i no doubt believe he 100% german but which national team you play for is a blurry line.

for instance, american chris kaman also plays for the german team.

the guy slated to go no.1 in this years nba draft also had a choice between australia and usa due to his american dad playing ball in australia and him living here for while.

nah, he only played a few games there and wants to get back to the nba.

This is a very simple fact: their is a list of names which Poles are allowed to call their kids. It has been discussed here several times. I'm sorry that you don't know much about Poland.

No, 'Nowicki' would be the Polish name. Read the back of his shirt: it does not say 'Nowicki'. Call him Nowicki as many times as you want, it still won't be his name.

My goddaughter's parents wanted to name the girl Vanessa, i.e. with a V instead of a W. The powers that be said no, but after a little fight they relented.

Rule isn't applied if one (or both) parent is not Polish. With the exception that all girls' names must end with the letter a. So a guy I knew was not allowed to register his daughter as 'Lauren', only Laura or Laurena.

One more question, could you show or say where I can find this list of names which are allowed for Polish parents to be given to their children?

Sorry but I don't know where it might be online. However, I assume that every registry office must have a copy. I do however know that Lauren is not on the list and neither is Kevin (or Kewin) as that one was also rejected.

I think that's because there is no such list. The people who told you about it probably mean a plain calendar with names. If a name is in the calendar then it surely be accpeted with any problems.

As far as I know, the principle applied isn't a list of names, but rather that names must be Polish - or at least look like it's a Polish name. But the individual registrar has the power to decide - and anything for a girl that doesn't end in "a" will be instantly rejected.

I heard of one case where ethnic Lithuanian parents were refused "roze" for a girl - they had to have the Polish version.

Anyway, why aren't the Polish-Americans complaining about the RACIST POLONOPHOBIC word in the thread title?

You are right Harry. I think up to the 90s you were not able to name your child as you wished to unless your chosen first name was listed in the Polish civil register. Also, the USC-civil office registering the first name or names would advise you to choose at least one Catholic first name (if you were Catholic and most people were) from the church register just to overcome any problems if you intended to baptise your child. When baptising, it was required a child has at least one Catholic first name and usually chosen from the list of Roman-Catholics Saints .

It changed a little these days but church still requires a child to be named with at least one Catholic name . The civil register is much more approacheable and is able to register first names but within stated norms. About these details you should ask your local registry office.
