I hope it all goes according to fairplay, I will reiterate Krakow does not need more exposure it is known the world over.

No it isn't. Krakow could handle twice as many tourists.

I'm sure the local government agree, as they have organised this and after all its what the Euro is all about (and football)

When I go to Krakow and I find it difficult to get a seat on the Rynek or I have to queue to get into some restaurant, I certainly do not consider the city could handle twice as many tourists. In fact I would go as far as to say that " tourism" in Krakow is very ' Mickey mouse' Krakow should spend some money on infrastructure and do more to assist/support business in Krakow, than think it has the chicken that lays the golden egg.

Krakow first of all should consider are we a global tourist destination or are we a destination for Stag nights.

That's the same the world over in any tourist destination.

I would guess that most non football visitors will schedule their visits after the Euros have finished. They are actually forcasting so for London during the Olympics.

I live in Krakow and I can tell you its not over filled with visitors most of the time.

People who live and work here want visitors and their money, obviously as a visitor you want the opposite.

I am not suggesting it is, July can be a very over crowded time for the tourist.

I believe we both want the same, punters turning up spending their money, as the saying goes- nothing is for free, so time for Krakow to invest and sort out its problems, start supporting local business communities and find its identity, then the experts can sell it.

It has been confirmed that Englands' squad base will be in Poland for Euro 2012.

"Russia already committed to stay and train in Kiev, and currently its citizens must apply for entry to Poland, which is a member of the European Union political bloc. UEFA will try to persuade state authorities to accept a match ticket as a short-term travel visa.

Germany also will keep its chosen base in Gdansk.

"It is much more important for us to have a good training base camp,'' general manager Oliver Bierhoff said. "For the German supporters, it would have been better to be in Poland, for sure.''
England also chose Poland's more modern facilities, and must twice fly 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Krakow to play in Donetsk. It's just an 800-kilometer (500 mile) hop to a third group match in Kiev.
But the English have no plans to move either." What is it just politics or it's a preference? ;-)

Peter Cracow  Dec 4, 11, 03:03    #38
Cracow has about 750 000 registered but over 1 000 000 real citizens. I don't know whether it is big or not. Bigger than Estonia, smaller than New York.
Most important is that Cracow hosts about 9 000 000 tourists by year. During pope's visits Cracow hosted 1 500 000 - 2 000 000 pilgrims every single day. There was no problem with transportation, accomodation, feeding, hygiene, safety, etc.
So what do you think, a few planes with football fans can impress anybody here?

The England fans wont be in Krakow anyway. England will only play 1 game in Poland if they even get that far :)

I think Ireland should use Torun as their base as its in the middle of Poznan and Gdansk. Its also has a very nice old town.

What sort of football team do Torun have? I only know about Widzew Łódź and ŁKS.

Not sure about the logistics for the fans there, I believe it would be better for Irish fans and team to base themselves in Warsaw, 3 hours to Poznan, 4hrs to Gdansk, 3 hrs to krakow. Good training facilities for the team, domestic/international Airport. Excellent hotels.

For the fans its 2 hours to Poznan and about 2.5 hours to Gdansk.

I prefer Toruń to Krakow aswell, the only good thing about Krakow is the Castle and that Zakopane is 2 hours away :D

There will be very few English hooligans in Poland as anyone with a conviction for football violence has to surrender their passports whilst the Euros are taking place.

The Poles will attack family men who are just there to watch a game and then boast how they are harder than the English hooligan firms.

Still, lots of Polish in the UK for us to have some 'fun' with when it happens.

Absolute distance is not the issue. Boredom between matches is, I'd prefer a town where I can have fun and that is why the team choose Krakow.
