delphiandomine:

Have you seen that they're now not showing Caps vs Bison on Sky (for which we need every bit of publicity we can get...), but rather showing Sheffield vs Nottingham?

Yes I got an email about it yesterday. It's shocking. It won't pull enough audience figures for them. So much was riding on that broadcast.

delphiandomine:

Capitals will be gone from the EIHL next season now, surely.

It's not really a bad thing. We need to take a season or two out and work things from there. We can play in other league. As I said above EIHL has only a short time left anyway. Too many problems every season. If all the teams thought about it they'd all drop out of it, especially in the next season, where is the money coming from? What company has the money to sponsor any team that could potentially go down the tubes at any time in the season?

It doesn't bode well, does it? He's already securing a new job...

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forum and would like to talk about the main point of this topic.

I recently came over to Poland and just finished playing ice hockey at University both in league and national tournaments. I also played in the English league with a couple of teams.
I would like to know how easy it would be to get involved in playing with a team over here?

I'm in Warsaw and recently watched Legia Warsaw who are sat in Div.2. They're not great, but not terrible either. Is it possible to get involved with these teams?

First things first, is having the kit sent over ...

Don't take this as fact, but there would probably be ITC issues. This might be a pest, as they might have import restrictions. I really don't know - I've had a search but can't seem to find any rosters for the second division teams. If they have imports, then there's a possibility.

There's quite a healthy rec scene in Poland though, I believe...

I found one roster for Legia Warszawa and it had only all Polish names on it but that means nothing I guess.

James, the best thing to do is try to talk to someone at the ice rink. There's a strong chance you might be better than the PL Div 2 anyway. ;)

Here are some pictures of Legia Warszawa.

Here in Toronto hockey is deff the number 1 sport followed by the nbas raptors.

I wouldn't be so sure.
In fact, they say hockey is dying in Toronto. And this isn't an isolated article. It seems that the immigration is what is killing hockey. Not all can afford hundreds, sometimes thousands in hockey gear. Most can afford a soccer ball, the cost split among a dozen or so kids.

I remember watching hockey in Poland in 1970's. Polish team was between OK and iffy. A touch to good to be in class B so they always won and got to class A. But they were never good enough to stay in class A so they went back to class B.

We practiced at "Bogdanka" but for the next season we will have a new ice rink (international size). You're in Poznan?

Sorry for double posting, looks like there's no 'edit' option.

If anyone with some hockey background (high school, college, various leagues etc.) wants to play ice hockey in Poznan feel free to PM me. This season is over but we are planning on playing in some tournaments and exhibition games outside Poznan in the up coming weeks. So if you guys are quick enough you still might make it and play soon. We are open to foreigners so no worries :)

Cheers,

Loma

I always wanted to play, but I don't :(

Maybe next season... if you could tolerate a complete newbie to hockey (though not to skating ;P)

Hey Delphiandomine,

No worries, there are at least three teams (IRC) at various levels so you certainly will get a chance to play. However, you'll need equipment to play. Let's keep in touch.

Cheers,

Loma

Could anyone tell about ice hockey possibilities for juniors in Poland?

*How much juniors can train on ice?
*How much does the hobby cost?
*Is it possible to play with a year older teams (for skilled)?

We are planning to move to Katowice area with 7 and 11 year old ice hockey players. My older boy is very good and quite serious with hockey =) Younger is also quite ambitious. He has trained two years now.

Thanks in advance...

Oh dear....

PolskaDoll, have you heard the latest news about the EIHL? Rumours are flying round that Sheffield/Nottingham/Hull/Coventry/Belfast/Cardiff are going to 'go it alone' - and leave Newcastle/Edinburgh/Manchester with nowhere to play. The Bison are already gone from the EIHL for next season...

Looks like all the talk about a potential Northern Premier League could just happen. A league consisting of Newcastle (out of Whitley), Manchester, Edinburgh, Paisley, Dundee, Fife, Solway and one of the Dundalk teams sounds like it could actually be quite entertaining.

Hello :)

Yes that is one of the many rumours I have heard in the past fortnight although I have been "assured" that we are staying in the EIHL.

Chatting with friends at the Manchester game on the 21st (the game that got us into the playoffs!) it's pretty obvious that our favourite times throughout our support of the teams (since the Racers went) was when we used to play teams like Whitley, Paisley Dundee, Fife etc.

I would actually welcome this, as I am sure many fans would. I don't imagine that Doug Christiansen will return next season (everyone seems to hate him which is ironic since that in two seasons he has got us almost to the play-offs and then into the play-offs) so we'll be looking for a new coach as it is.
The Capitals rumour-mill is one of the worst though and often questions don't get answered until the first game of a new season... ;)

There is an ametuer English speaking ice hockey team in Warsaw playing in some local league. Mainly made up of Canadian's living in Warsaw, they are called the Beavers. Knowing nothing about ice hockey I have no idea what standard they are.

That's why we have the Zamboni, to make the ice nice and smooth and shiny again. :)

Can't argue with that. ;)

I see Scott Neil's released a statement on this whole mess - http://www.edinburgh-capitals.com/news/detail.php?id=978 . Looks like any chance that they had of staying in the EIHL has gone now, but ... who knows.

Just shows how quickly things can change though :s

Still, here's for a more suitable Northern League next season :D

He's done the right thing with this statement, as shocking as it may be. There's no reply as yet from the EIHL and I don't expect there to be. It is the finals weekend of course. He picked a good weekend to make the statement. :) I'd rather come out of EIHL really and start anew in another league. The hockey was better before the EIHL.

Better games, less money being forked out by the teams. The EIHL tried to copy what the other major leagues in Europe are doing but they were never going to be the same. Bring it back a few levels and begin the build up again and this time...do it right...

Latest update : Team GB are distinctly rubbish at letting in soft goals :(

I'm starting to think we'll be stuck in Division I forever and ever at this rate, Romania are apparently missing their best players so they'll almost certainly go down..but beating anyone else?

Team GB

Gubbed again! 5-2. Hmm, Jody Lehman or Stevie Lyle in goals? Which one?

Poland though, beat Romania 7-0.

GB should beat Romania tomorrow.... :/

Lehman, though he wasn't anything special at all. But it really wouldn't have mattered, Italy didn't even look like they got out of 1st gear. I missed the third period, and I see Shields was a bit of a muppet for checking from behind too :(

Still, we thrashed Romania 8-0, so it's not all bad news.. but then again, they're missing some of their best players and are getting thrashed by everyone. Poland-GB will almost certainly be the bronze medal match though.

Ah well, another year of medicority!

What makes it even more ridiculous is that teams like Croatia/Australia/Holand are all at the Division 1 level too :(

Bronze medal? Eh...?

I was actually furious by the end, I wanted penalty shots!

But the whole game, I was convinced that GB needed a win in regulation time, only to discover when OT started that it was simply winner take all in respect to the medal. Pleasant surprise, really :)

Could someone be so kind to PM Loma or otherwise get his attention? I can't PM cause I just created an account.

I'm coming to Poznan mid august and staying for a year as an exchange student. I've played on Finlands highest junior level before but lately just for fun with our own universitys team coaching it also.

Needless to say ice-hockey is big part of me and we've had quite a few foreigners playing at our team in Lappeenranta. I really want to play with polish guys too, cause that is one of the best ways to get to know the local people and culture without too much hassle!

It really is a pain in the ass to try to find info about polish ice-hockey, cause a) everything is in polish b) everything is about hockey(not ice-)

Cheers
