Polish fans of Legia Warsaw piggybacked on extreme Islamic rhetoric on Thursday night in the Europa League, as they displayed a ginormous “Jihad Legia” banner in the match with Israeli outfit Hapoel Tel Aviv.
To many the unfurling of the giant banner was a distasteful act which stunk of antisemitism. Written in Arabic-style letters, the green banner was construed by many as a thumb in the eye to Hapoel and moreover the Jewish people at large.
However, the case of the Jihad banner may be a little more complex.
As reported by TheNews.Pl, “editor of the Hebrew Section at Polish Radio’s External Service, Jaroslaw Kociszewski, who was at the game, says that despite the sign displayed before the match saying ‘Legia Jihad’ – which can be seen during many domestic fixtures at the Warsaw stadium – Legia fans were boisterous, but generally well behaved. ‘I heard no anti-Semitic chanting and saw no aggression,’ Kociszewksi says… ‘You can see the Jihad banner at many Legia home games,’ he adds.”
Legia, who won the contest 3-2, now wait to see what punishment, if any, will be served on them by Uefa. The most likely punishments would be a banning order on Legia fans and/or a fine.

We all know that jihad is what is needed to overcome the fascist state of Israel. Diplomacy will never work and we are seeing it now. Well done Legia in getting the message across. I say this with sympathy to nice Israelis who don't approve of the IDF and other brutal groups that seek to maim and ridicule innocent Palestinians. There are many nice Israelis and I wouldn't like to see them in harm's way either. Avoid the death of innocents but topple corrupt regimes.

I also don`t consider the banner a big deal. Just a little provocation, that`s all. Intelligent, too. Nothing serious.

How is it intelligent, pawian? I know you are one of the friendlier posters with regards to Jews so what did you mean?
Brit-Pol  Oct 8, 11, 00:30    #5
I was at the game this Sunday against Wisla Krakow. Maor Melikson took no abuse at all and there was no anti-semitic chanting.

Wasn`t it intelligent to display such a banner and rightfully claim it wasn`t an act of antisemitism? :):):):)

Don't know much about this but didn't Leeds fans once refer to themselves as The Yorkshire Republican Army in what was a fairly obvious reference to the IRA.

At the same time, there were certainly no actual sympathies - just being cheeky and provocative.

Is this kind of the same type of thing maybe?

Polish football fans used to cheer for Northern Irish Catholics when Poland played against Northern Ireland. But, hey, protestants didn't come up with a catchy word like "antiprotestantism". If one looks for "antisemitism" everywhere, they will find it, or rather create it.

OH THE TRAGEDY. I guess this means the fans want to kill 6 million jews.

its laughable at best. some jews and liberal groups are way to sensitive like its the holocaust all over again.

Read again - how can Jihad Legia be antisemitic ? :):):)

Whatever the Jews want is anti-semitic. Whatever they think... just call up AIPAC and ADL and bam its labeled anti-semitism.
They really must feel like the chosen ones.

Why would they use "Jihad?" Do they want to be muslims?

They wouldn't do that because of the Nazi Germany connection.

how can it be antisemitic if it was in Arabic-style letters and was styled after a religion which is largely identified as being Semitic (the first Muslims were Semitic and many still identify them exclusively as being from the middle east)?

On a side note, you really have to appreciate the coordination required to get that done, especially at a stadium level.

Sounds like a situation where the ones holding the banner simply wisht they were Muslim. It doesn't appear antisemitic.

Nice coreo...Legia's fans know how to do it good!

Jews people before they speak about the rest they should think what is going on in Palestine and how they treat the muslims there! Why you are soooo sensitive?

it might have something to do with the fact that they were systematically slaughtered during the second world war

however they do not have a monopoly on pain and suffering

No they didn't.....

They are known as Leeds Service Crew or to give them their full title....Leeds United Service Crew (LUSC).....Bunch of coonts and have locked horns with them on a number of occassions.

The Yorkshire Republican Army is a football chant used by a lot of the Yorkshire teams......although the remainder of your point is quite valid.

I love the 'Israel Diplomacy Master' ad under the OP ;)

They shouldn't be punished, no. They are not singling out any group. Heck, even Polish troops are the targets of jihadis (jihadists) in Afghanistan. On these kinds of matters, Poles don't go against their own.

You can stick your Jihad up your ass. maybe after a 7/7 or 9/11 you won't find it so funny. No few months go by in this country without some new Islamic terror plot being uncovered. Poland has the luxury of not having any angry radical hateful Muslims that are hostile and intolerant towards the host culture.

i see that my brothers from Warsawa didn`t lost their sense of humor, in time when evil threatening to brake thru the southern gates of Sarmatia. Good. Slava to you my brothers

You think they will find that sign funny in Banja Luka ? No they will be skinned alive if they tried putting that sign up there.

KA, 7/7 was an inside job and I can convince you of that. 9/11, perhaps too but guilty by reckless omission. Innocent Muslims are killed in large numbers around the world so jihad is perfectly understandable. Jihad is merely a symbol of the fight against injustice. It can be used in a bad way, i.e in Bosnia, but it's all about their perceived injustice.
