Lukas Podolski played against Hoffenheim, wearing a black armband DESPITE
the official interdiction from the FC Koeln authorities.

When Podolski mentioned that he would like to wear the armband to commemorate
the vicitims of Smolensk tragedy, the club authorities have forbidden him that gesture!
He wore the armband nonetheless. Even a couple of minutes before the game, the general
manager of FC Koeln was trying to convince Podolski to change his decision.

"When German soldiers died in afghanistan" you didn't wear a black armband - said
Michael Meier to Podolski.

Torq

Ridiculous. You'll be happy to know that the overwhelming comments by Germans are that of shame and anger towards an idiot coach.

Can't remember any Polish wearing black armbands when Polish soldiers died in Afghanistan?

Some Germans wore black stockings when their soldiers died in Afghanistan.

Unbelievable!

I googled that story in the german press:
http://www.express.de/sport/fussball/fc-koeln/zoff-um-podolskis-trauer flor-/-/3192/1835716/-/index.html

The explanation was actually:
You need a permission for it...at least from the referee! Oh boy....idiots

What did you think Torq? A good time to strengthen anti-german prejudices again?

I didn't know what to think. I mean - the man just wanted to wear a black
armband... feckinhell... that was shocking news when I read that.

No such thing as "anti-german" prejudices here in Poland. Quite the contrary:
German is the second most popular foreign language taught in schools and universities
in our country, German minority enjoys rights that 20 times larger Polish minority in Germany
can only dream of, and the fact of slaughtering 6 million Polish citizens by Germans during
WW2 is by and large forgiven by our people (not forgotten, mind you).
"Anti-German" prejudices? Yer havin' a laugh...

We Germans are for sure not being known for being especially sensitive or emotional but even for a German is this what happened in Köln really crass, believe me...I just hope the responsible persons get flak now.

But don't tell me that Poles reading that won't think: "Those f*ucking Germans again, still Pole-hating Nazis!".

Maybe it's a consolation for you that in the Netherlands there are plenty of mourning ppl:

If you can read Dutch, you could have a look at this link...

I'd be truly shcoked if FC Koeln's coach's feelings were shared by majority of Germans,
so I was glad to read the comments from German posters.

My sentiments exactly!

still Pole-hating Nazis!

Naah - I wouldn't go that far.

So much for reconciliation, huh? It needs just one little event and it's all back to square one, yes?
Maybe we should forget about it and not longer try. :(

Come on - don't exagerate! Of course that the first reaction would be "Those effing Germans
again", but on the second thought I'm sure that people would understand that it's only antics
of an idiot coach.

Instead of being p'issed at these idiots from the FC Köln together you, you of all PFers, make it to a "Germans against Poles" issue!

When did I make it a "Germans against Poles" issue? I only quoted sport.onet article,
so more people could know what a complete and utter arsehole Meier is, so next time
he comes to Poland with one of his teams, he gets a proper dose of boos and whistling!

And I hope he will!

I agree with BB on that. You are nit picking by posting this thread and it looks like he was allowed to wear it. Burza w szklance wody z Twojej strony.

Meier is a c*nt.

It should be noted that players for teams whose manager isn't a c*nt obviously had no problem. Someone is just pissed that €10m Podolski hasn't paid off for his team...

let's face it....it doesn't take a nice guy.....hell, you can be a total jagg off and still have a successful sports team if you know how to coach your players properly. a coach often times is as big a misfit as the idiot players he has on the team.....after all, he was a player once. soccer players can run and kick a ball....being nice....or respectful in this case.... isn't part of the selection process.
