Congrats to any Spaniards (or Spain fans) on PF, and to our Dutch contingent as well for putting up a good fight. Personally I'm no big footie fan, but I have alwaya felt the game would be livelier and more goals would be scored if the off-sides nonsense was done away with. What (if any) are the arguments for keeping that rule in force?

The game would be boring as hell. just a bunch of sprinting and kicking the ball down the field. you wouldn't need a midfield at all.

What fun is getting one-on-one with goalie just because you stood the closest to him when you received a pass? Off-side rule makes the struggle for the ball during the attacking part or counter-attack more interesting as you cannot be the last person on your way to the enemy's gates. Can you imagine attackers always standing by the other team's net waiting for a pass? This will result in pulling back of your team's offensive forces and the struggle in the middle-field will become extinct. The players would become lazy and heavy and exciting part of watching this beautiful game will simply be lost. No way! Off-side rule to live forever!

Stops players goal hanging - effectively forcing them to use more skill instead of just placing big brutes in the six yard box, as was common before the offside rule was introduced.

Anyway, when the offside trap is beaten, it's absolutely beautiful.

Agree with the previous three posters. It's like saying "what's the point of having a forward-pass rule in rugby?" (i.e., it's easier to pass forwards than backwards).

Speaking of rugby, I once read a rather funny book on rugby which suggested "maybe two balls could be used" :D This could also be applied to football, and could indeed make the game more interesting, offside rule or not, lol

You're quite correct. The way soccer is played today the defensemen control the offsides of the attacking team. Ridiculous.

Soccer should do what they do in hockey, use a blue line, i.e., the ball has to arrive in the attacking zone before the player. A Blue Line offsides would avoid players hanging around the net.

that's basically what the offsides is in soccer but this "line" moves.. it should stay, it's great otherwise it presents an unfair advantage to the attacking players...

I think soccer would be a lot more interesting/fun to watch if there were no goalies. More scoring = more excitement fewer ties and no need for penalty shoot outs (a dumb and arbitrary way to end a championship, why not just flip a coin?)

huh? it's not arbitrary at all.. the team that SCORES more goals in the shootaout wins the game.. nothing arbitrary about it..

about the same when americans talk about hockey.. most have no idea about the rules and how the game works.
