After completely annihilating their opponents (Great Britain, Russia and Czech Republic) in the semi-final
in King's Lynn, Polish team were favourites to win yesterday's World Cup final in Gorzów... and they didn't
fail - after an amazing battle Poland finished ahead of the strong Australian team, with Swedes winning
the bronze medal and Denmark finishing just one point behind the Swedish team.

Poland

Final Standings:

1. Poland 51 pts
2. Australia 45
3. Sweden 30
4. Denmark 29

That was third consecutive World Cup triumph for Poland (no team in the World has ever
managed such feat!)

Congratulations to the team and for the individual champion Tomasz Gollob .

Tomasz Gollob is Poland's first world champion in 37 years and only their second in speedway history (Jerzy Szczakiel was the first in 1973). Tomasz finally clinched the title after racing in 129 Grand Prix events - in fact he won the first SGP round at Wroclaw in 1995. Has now won 20 GPs, two less than Jason Crump. Broke an ankle days before the final round in Bydgoszcz last year and completed only one race, which he won, on his home town track to underline his superstar status in his own country and also shed himself of the tag 'the best rider never to have won the world championship'. Can he add a second title in 2011?

And sometimes, hooligans ;)

(Bydgoszcz-Torun always seems good for some good old fashioned anarchy)

For me, it's something Poland should be proud of - they've built the best league in the world by a long, long way - just look at all the foreign riders coming here! I remember being really shocked after reading that some team in the UK lost a rider to Poland because Poland could offer more money - but now I understand ;)

Watch the YouTube video of heat 25, that I posted, and tell me again that it's not exciting to watch.

It was OK. I'll take boxing, football or volleyball.

Only internet trolls say such things , normal people, who live here in Poland think about our country very differently .

OK, it's all clear now :)

Speedway is a bit more upbeat than curling, a sport where Scotland excels. I've never heard any students talking about it here, though.
Monia  Jul 17, 11, 20:09    #21
Again Seanus , I quoted his comment only partially , as I wanted to underly his, no less accurate comment, that he had in mind - I presumed - about notorious cmments, posted here on PF , about Poland being such a hopeless country . Don`t you think I was right , FP ?

It was ambiguous but has been cleared up by all concerned so let's not nitpick and deflect attention from the thread.

yet you found it prudent to post this in the speedway thread, completely out of the blue and unrelated, once again proving your knee-jerk hypersensitivity and what the hell is 'underly'??
Monia  Jul 17, 11, 20:25    #27
Sorry for my mistake , FP ,buit I was typing too fast coz I wanted to give my answer as quickly as possible ,but I wanted to use " underline " , sorry again .

Yes, I like handball, even if Denmark seems to be slightly better at it than Poland ;)
