Was this year a sign of things to come for the polish team or can Smuda pull a rabbit out of his hat? Despite his shocking record thus far, I still think he is taking the right steps, like trying to recruit foreign talent like Sebastian Boenisch for example. There are also rumours of Roberto Aquafresca thinking of playing for the team. With some star players to build the team around and some more experience we could be the dark horse of the tournament.

Wait, are you threatening the other teams? It's only football, no violence is needed!

Recent friendlies have been mixed. 0-6 Spain was harsh, 0-3 Cameroon, tying USA (in the US!), and recently tying Ecuador (Poland came close to a win). In November they'll be playing the Ivory Coast, looking forward to that game to see if they really are improving :)

I think calling the the results "mixed" is a bitter of an overstatement. Whatever Smuda has to offer he better show it soon as many ppl are getting weary of these poor performances. Having said that, its early days and from what he says about the brand football he wants to play and the players he wants to recruit i think his on the right track. However right now its all talk no action

You people should really listen to Obama every now and then. I mean, if you can't convince yourselves, then how could you ever hope to convince us? (I guess someone will need to believe in it.)

First thing Smuda needs to sort out is the defence. It's not just the amount of goals Poland are conceding, it's also the manner of them. Poland are gifting soft goals away and unless that is sorted out they won't win a thing.

Win? Quite incredibly. With current players it is remotely possible only a'la Greece championship style. Considering the fact that Greeks simply murdered football, I wouldn't want that... Besides final is in Kiev anyway.. So if by any chance Polish team will get into semi-finals that would fine by me.

Of course there is always a tiny possibility that in next year a few megastars will emerge in Polish league and wipe out everyone in 2012 ;-)

It's doesn't mean anything. Well, yes it does. It shows that the Polish team is under construction, there's a lot left to do but it can only get better. I dare hope...
Spain lost to Argentina recently (4-1), it doesn't mean your team suck ;)
Time will tell.

In general, USA & Japan are the teams to watch.

USA, for the sheer wealth of athletic talent available - plus of course the fact that they are actually playing and learning the game these days ; )

And Japan because given time, the bloody Japanese will perfect almost anything!

Ireland of course just need a few more up and coming English players who own an Irish red setter or something and have some beef with the England selectors and will declare for Ireland.

6 players who usually play in the first team were out , plus the travel to another continent.

what is your excuse for the 6-0 ...did you play with toilet cleaners and not footballers?

I agree fully, it's only a matter of time with the US and at least in Japan soccer is already biiiiiig.
The Bundesliga has it's own japanese player already and here the people love him!
They are smaller than average but they have the discipline and determination what made the Germans so successful. Their big disadvantage is that they don't have the competition we in Europe have...you need to go against the best regularly when you want to grow, not once every 4 years.

I dunno about that, i remember when we had the world cup here in the States in 1994, people we're enthusiastic and proud that they were held here but aside from girls not much male attention, American men think it's kinda girly kicking with legs, not using your hands in a sport. Plus Americans are proud of their sports, baseball and football.

Heh, a good three quarters of the country had no idea that the world cup was going on :)

Anyway, the demographics in the states are changing. Mesicans don't play American football you know :)

Yeah but soccer is big in LA, NYC, Chicago.. Texas, St. Louis. It's not exactly inconsequential but yes it will never be big here.

Anyway, can't wait for Euro 2010. It's the best.

I know most had no idea they were going on, i meant the ones who did didn't care, the men mostly. Me and my Polish buddies play football(soccer) sometimes with Mexicans in the summertime, sometimes it gets rough when Poles try to use their bigger size to push them out the way lol.

Well, theoretically the answer should be YES, as the rules of the tournament are such
that every competing team can win it (even if that probability, in case of some teams,
is very low.)
Realistically, of course, the answer is NO.

Of course we will! If Poland manages to avoid complete and utter embarassment, I'll be happy :)

*however, avoiding embarassment would require winning at least one game, which may
be difficult if San Marino fails to qualify*

Polish business will win for the duration of the tournament. 1 out of 2 is still 50%.

We'll call "embarrassment" sorrow, and drink.

Ah, the difference between an optimist and a realist :)

I will send you a bottle of spirits from wherever I'm at for every game that Poland wins in Euro2012. On the flipside, I'd be expecting a bottle of you know what for every game that Poland, ahem, doesn't win.... A full bottle too!

So, basically, you're telling me to send you three bottles of chokeberry vodka in June 2012.

No problem.
