Poland finished second - with only Japan above them in the medal table - in the Sumo World Championships in Warsaw this weekend.

I seriously didn't know that this was a big thing in Poland. I knew about wrestling but not "Sumo wrestling"...

Not exactly something we should be proud of... those guys can hardly be called athletes.

Yet one was considered to fight Pudzian. Robert Paczków would have been an interesting proposition for him as it would be hard to take him down. Getting in close to these guys is also hard.

Paczków is not that big for a sumo wrestler. I would have thought Outer Mongolia would occupy second spot though maybe they only have Asashoryu.

What do you mean? They've already qualified ;) ;)

Paczków beat a huge Georgian guy to win the sumo championship in 2009. He was getting pushed around but maintained his balance and reversed beautifully to win.

There was a guy on a TV show (Długi Twarz?) a few years ago who was world champion.

Ever seen the training a sumo wrestler goes through? Don't be fooled by the looks.

He was succeeded by this chap: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakuh%C5%8D_Sh%C5%8D

Mongolian wrestling is quite different to Sumo,

It seems you know nothing about this sport.

"Poland world’s second best at Sumo wrestling" - it's been like that for a couple of years now.

Is that necessarily a bad thing?

In other words, who the **** cares?

If you comment like that, some people would care;)
It is not bad, but it's not good to comment in a way you did too. Those guys are usually very fast and this kind of wrestling used to be quite brutal actually.

Sumo is a respected discipline in the Far East and it should be treated with respect, Filios. Every discipline has sth different and we shouldn't knock it for no good reason.

Plus I merit far more useful sports disciplines(sumo being one, as for self defence for example) from the useless ones (with respect) like curling, ski jumping or football.

Most of these guys are far too obese to even be able to defend themselves properly, or run away from a given crisis... I would much rather have no sumo experience, and have speed/agility.. This is far more important in a fight.

Have you actually seen a sumo fight? It lasts a dozen seconds. Would you attack such a guy in a bar? They are very fast and their size is usually muscles covered by fat to gain mass. But you see only fat;). Don't be mistaken by this - they may not be sprinters, but most of them run and train a lot and are very fit, despite the looks.

I watched the Fukuoka bashos and they were entertaining. It's quite calm, then suddenly explosive.

Lets think of more superlatives shall we:

1. Poolish dogs have the brownest s*** in the world
2. Polish men have the third cheesiest b*** **** in the worldthe longest time under the sunbed, 2 1/2 minutes longer, in fact.

See how rediculous the above sounds? As stupid as bragging about sumo wrestiling in a country in which it is not the national sport.

Imagine that before Adam Małysz started winning competition, ski jumping also wasn't polish national sport...
Before Kubica became 1st Polish driver in Formula 1 only few people had been intrested in Formula 1 racings...

Welshguy I don't get your attitude.

Its about this unecessary braggin that these Poles do over the slightest lil things. UK has one of the best curling teams in the world but we dont brag about it cos it is not our national sport, in fact it is an embarrasment.

How is it great that Poles have good sumo wrestlers when they are just fat and out of shape. is that really sth to brag about?

I don't see any trait of bragging. Just an intresting (and suprising) news.

I absolutely don't understand you...

So what's the Polish national sport by the way? Zo¶ka?? Palant??? ;DDD

I imagine that being so fat and having to crouch and then stand very fast and push the opponent is not easy task for an obese person so yes I believe they are 100% athletes.
