it's frightening how bad a straight bjj player's takedown skills can actually be- just a crap dive at the legs with back bent all to heck and looking down.

that being said, i noticed that for some reason, when i have no fear of being taken down whatsoever, i usually just go to my bread and butter double-switch to single-switch to body lock trip combo. If the guys suddenly got inspired i'd be choked out (or at least put in a compromising position) mighty quickly. Sometimes practice partners just give up the take down so routinely that there's never any immediate stimulus to use more intelligent (or flashy) takedowns.

having said that bjj player's takedown skills are generally very one dimensional or only a vague idea without any real fundamental training imho.

might that not be a boxing technique? :-)
MMA practitioners have been cross training for years. 52 blocks seems to be the latest style to get rediscovered. Rashad Evans is employing some jail house rock into his dirty boxing game.
Check out the Snakepit in Wigan, Lancashire. It was one of the world's best catch wrestling gyms. I lived in Wigan as a kid and trained judo. Deeply regret not training catch.

many of the catch submission techniques appear to be very injurious. having never fought MMA at competition level, can you be disqualified/banned from competition for breaking someone's arm without giving them time to tap?
I expect you cannot.
Gilbert 'Eye Gouge' Yvel springs to mind. I seem to remember he bit a referee once and they let him continue competing. He certainly knocked a referee out. Bobby Frankham got his boxing licence revoked for hitting a referee so did his brother Johnny.

Kimbo Vs Butterbean, who'd win? Kimbo needs to fight Shamrock, I think Kimbo would take him to the cleaners. Kimbo Vs Chuck Liddell would be interesting but not gonna happen.

he's a freakshow until he fights a contender to anything. Shammy's days of works and thrown fights fit nicely into Kimbo's habit of finding fighters who do works and throw fights-it's a match made in heaven for promoters and bookies.

Chack has future matchup with Rua-we'll see how Rua comes back from the knee surgery, which was before the poor showing with griffen, which was before his other surgery, which was after he had to lay off the horse p"ss he was taking in Japan.
Chack wins, Quinton wins and we see a replay of quinton beating chuck. After that, if Wandy doesn't go to dreams then he'll factor in there somewhere.

This is ridiculous, we need to find an event to go to dude.

For sure, I'll keep my eyes peeled for any forthcoming tourneys in Bytom. Gliwice allegedly has a fight scene, gotta scope it out.

How's teaching been Ian?

who the hell is that? I'm foreigner4. Yeah G-town should have something but i'm grounded tonight so i can't ask until tomorrow, if the main man is in that is. I've been teaching a lot of wrestling based takedowns lately. Some of the guys just don't get it though-they're always in competitive mode. I.e. they simply refuse to go with the technique for the sake of learning. That is the one thing that absolutely pisses me off about training with or teaching the Poles, there is this rather large percentage that can't accept you know something that they don't and are always trying to point out some flaw in whatever. As if i didn't know there is a counter or two to the double.

Sorry about the rant, as mentioned i can't go in for my appointment to have my unblemished complexion removed....aaaaand I was supposed to get some new kneepads shipped in, 240zł right? and you know what i got instead? two f'n cliffkeen airbraces-wtf? I can't use them on a daily basis-wtf?

On topic: Robert Jocz is making a name for himself beating all of his opponents in the bigger Dutch events over the last years. He's got another tough fight coming up 24/01/2009 against Dion Staring in the Beast of the East event in Holland. He's now managed by team Superpro same organization that has Albert Kraus.

record:
Length: 1.80 cm
Weight: 90 kg
Age: 32
Country: Poland
Place: Warshaw
M.M.A. Record: 8-4-0
Titles and Achievements:
1 time Judo Champion Poland
Wins over fighters like
Rodney Faverus, Murat Chunkaiev and Jordan Radaev

Other fighters that come to mind are: Lukasz Jarosz, Thomasz Sarara, Grzegorz Tredowski

I cannot post the link of where you can find their records but if you google: team beast of the east, and click on our team you will find these guys their records and some video where available.

KSW put on some great fights and used to bring in fighters from 2 hot 2 handle from the Netherlands. recently they have been bringing Lithuanian fighters to Poland though

Mamet Khalidov is a very exciting fighter. his fight with Clay Guida's brother Jason, was one of the best I have seen recently. this was in spite of Mamet breaking his thumb in the first round. Mamet is Chechen but based in Olsztyn, Poland.

Murat Chunkaiev is Chechen also and was supposed to be fighting Pawel Jozwiak during KSW

next week it is the European BJJ championship in Portugal and I expect Polish fighters to dominate there once again

there's a very good young kid who i think is only 17 that'll be there (or last i was told) he's got a bright future if he chooses to go further in this sport.

in a few weeks time Paweł Ostasz will be fighting again and he's definitely fun to watch- the man has vicious ground n pound- unreal how he can hit from anywhere, and relentless too.

The ufc has had a couple fighters with Polish names in them on their undercard events of late. I don't think they're based in Poland but definitely Americans of Polish ancestry.

Is Mamet related to Kirim (or Kyrym?) who i think is still based out of Katowice but he may have moved? I ask because he's also originally from Chechnya?

I do not think he is
Pawel Ostasz is very explosive indeed
there are so many young kids who are just fantastic fighters out there - what is more the quality of some of the training that is on offer nowadays is just superb.

I noticed that quite a few fighters from Gracie Barra in your neck of the woods are going out to Portugal

Robert did very well last year, if I remember well.
GB Tychy is a very good club

Pawel Ostasz will be fighting in KSW in early February with Jędrzej Kubski aka Wegorz
(the eel). Wegorz is a very experienced fighter and a purple belt in BJJ and very good submission skills. They last fought in 2006 and it promises to be a good fight

Robert was the only guy to go the distance with the eventual class winner, every one else got tapped. Unfortunately it was his first match of the tourney:( He won all of his team matches though and the year before won the whole enchilada. Maciek though, now there's a different animal- so bloody proficient and so f'n strong it feels like he actually hates you when you roll with him. I remember when one of Draculino's reps came from Brazil last summer, Serginio was his name I think. He rolled with all 50 or so of us and he wasn't much over 75kg and just tapped everyone with ease, except for Maciek, that one never did get resolved.

Paweł-yikes. Scary guy, and pretty bloody smart too, you'd never know by his appearance but the guy is very very smart. And he can deliver one hell of a knee. I stepped in to a jab just when he'd started to throw a knee, the consequences left me crumpled on the floor and still wondering if children will ever be a possibility.

Where's the fight at? I could ask him but I'm renovating so I kind of a hermit atm.

the KSW fight is going to be in Poznan.
The death of Helio Gracie this week is going to cast a shadow over this weekend's BJJ competition. Carlos Gracie Jr was supposed to be meeting all the Gracie Barra heads in Portugal but I am not sure if he will attend. Helio was buried yesterday. I never really fell for the McGracie corporation hype (particularly as Carlos Gracie Jr used to include a free BJJ instructors certificate with every set of instruction videos) however Helio seems to have been a really decent guy.
the articles on Sherdog are really quite moving

the latest news from Portugal

- Paweł "Picasso" Pilarz- brązowy medal (niebieskie, master)
- Waldek Lijewski- brązowy medal (niebieskie, senior 1)
- Robert Trzcionka- brązowy medal (brązowe, adult)
- Przemek "Wojna" Wojnowski- złoty medal (purpury, senior 1)
- Robert Trzcionka- srebrny medal (brązowe/czarne, National Teams)
- Maciej Polok- srebrny medal (brązowe/czarne, National Teams)

for non Polish speakers zloty = gold, srebrny = silver, brazowy = well you can probably see a pattern emerging by now so I will let you work that one out for yourselves :-)

these are the results for Gracie Barra only - no doubt Strefa Walki, Pretorians, Berserkers etc picked up a few medals too

In MMA you do not fight to death if that is what you mean by saying only one leaves. In the US its a very big sport where 2 guys will fight until either the time limit is up and the judges choose a winner, or one of the fighters knock out the other.

thanks alligator_s, I wonder who won the weightclass if Robert (bronze) nor Maciej (silver) won- I can't believe Maciej didn't win gold. Silver is really really good, he's just that good that he seemed a lock for that class.

Well it's nice to know those last 3 guys are from Tychy!
Congrats to everyone though.

You don't gotta tell me that man
But way back when, it really did have that feel about it. Starting back in 95 I would be roaming all the video stores in town for IFC's UFC's WFC's, MARS, Pankration, Hook'n Shoots and the list goes on. I was a fan in the dark dark days when NO ONE would give it an ounce of legitimacy.

So which fighters you in support of?

Anyway, so i'm looking at the galeria on that page and who do i see? I see that one dude who also runs some krav maga (whatever) school.

They guy sitting next to the belt+ his wife+ 3 kids+ a dog that may well have starved to death by now= pure entertainment.

Never mind the fights lets just watch them walk around and there'll be plenty of action.

i think i know who you mean.
i take it you are refering to a former Polish MMA champion
i do not quite understand what you mean

whereas i am not going to start slagging clubs off in a public forum
i have a soft spot for Gracie Barra and the Gameness Team
I wanted Szulc to win the thai boxing

a great night of fights
i thoroughly enjoyed myself and met some old friends who i had lost touch with

apart from one particularly bad example of partisan refereeing it was a huge improvement on the event in Poznan in November, well worth the long trek West

oh no no no, i don't think this guy was ever a champion of anything, my guess is he is promoting or co-promoting the event. Dude, I hate trash talk and slagging people off for no reason, definitely not me.
I don't really support clubs as much as i support individual fighters.

hi. I am relieved to hear it. it did not seem like your style in any case as you have always conducted yourself in a most gentlemanly manner in the past.

it is a complete coincidence that a former Polish MMA champion has three children, a wife and a dog so I believed that you were refering to him. As the said ex-MMA champ is still a friend of mine, it put me in a most uncomfortable position

Slawek, your colleague from the Bastian Tychy put on a very good show. excellent jiu jitsu and really great dirty boxing against a very well accomplished striker.

He's very good at slowing fast guys down isn't he? Well as you get older, you gotta get smarter and he's getting smarter all the time (haha).

Not only that but Sławek is probably the probably the nicest individual I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I consider that guy my closest friend in this country. Geeze the guy's around 37 and still fights. See for him it's not just about fighting but it's about putting in the work in events so that he can offer better instruction. He puts a lot on the line in tournaments to and it's all to make sure he can offer the best instruction he can. A lot of that dedication is for his family, if every father worked as hard for his family as that guy then the world would be a much better place. I can't say enough good things about that guy.

ahh i remember the days when i could still beat Sławek- those days are loooong gone.

I have friends who know Slawek and have nothing but good things to say about him, although I have never met him myself. He does seem to be a very nice chap.
his style reminds me of Renato Sobral with flashes of Carlos Newton.
i think he used the same anaconda choke as Babalu used on Rameau Thierry Sokodjou.
certainly looked like it. they put the VIP section up in the balcony so the view wasn't as good as ringside

i have a very good friend who is a trainer in Poland who regularly enter competitions at levels two or three belts higher knowing that he will lose. his argument is that it enables him to learn more things and pass this knowledge on to his students. it shows great dedication and a high level of self confidence. in the UK there are dozens of trainers that achieved nothing or came in third place at a regional competition ten years ago and cling to their former glory.
