I've been asked to write a few articles on Polish sporting heroes.

Who are some of the greatest sporting heroes over the years?

The boxer Andrew Golota may have been one if he could've stopped himself from cheating. Wasn't there a Polish fencer in the olympics who stabbed his Soviet opponent so forcefully that he actually killed him?

Des Essientes:
Andrew Golota

Andrew beat Bowe (twice) at a time when Bowe was the best rated fighter in the heavyweight division. Later was robbed split decision with Byrd, and loss to Ruiz.

Perhaps Golota is a sporting hero, but those two bouts with the low blows were very disappointing to me.
It was not a Pole that killed the Soviet, but rather a West German and it was at the 1982 World Championships rather than at the Olympics. There is this Polish fencer: Jerzy Paw這wski - a fencer and spy, won 5 olympic medals, 19-time world championship medalist (7 gold), in 1967 The International Fencing Federation called him the best fencer in the history of mankind, perhaps he qualifies as a Polish sporting hero.

My personal favourite - Wanda Rutkiewicz. Depends upon whether you count climbing as a sport or see it as thinly veiled lunacy. Amongst other things the first woman to summit K2.

As for national heroes: Adam Ma造sz, Irena Szewi雟ka, Ryszard Szurkowski, Jarzy Kulej, W豉dys豉w Kozakiewicz, famous for his gesture towards the Russians at tne Moscow Olympics where he won gold medal... are you interested in any particular sport or time period? Also some legendary coaches - Hubert Wagner (volleyball), a contemporary one - Bogdan Wenta (handball), not to mention Kazimierz G鏎ski form the golden era of Polish football.
And there's Pudzian as well :)

thanks everyone.

If you can think of any more that would be great, I've been asked to do sporadic articles on Polish sporting heroes from any time over the last 100 years.

Any other like Olympic heroes, old footballers, boxers etc.

thanks for what you've given so far, really helpful :)

Polish football players well known in the Netherlands:

*Jerzy Dudek: became national champion with Feyenoord in 1996 and the supercup (match between the cup winner and the national champion). Also became Dutch footballer of the year;

* W這dzimierz Smolarek: played two seasons for Feyenoord, then changed to FC Utrecht where he played until 1996. Then he became youth coach for FC Utrecht until 2009;

* Euzebiusz Smolarek: son of W這dzimierz, also played for Feyenoord, from 2000 until 2005 where he went through Feyenoord's youth system and subsequently played for the first team;

* Marcin Wasilewski: although he plays in Belgium (Anderlecht), he became well-known due to his horrific injury in 2009.

*Jerzy Dudek:

How could anybody forget Dudeks knobbly knees penalty saving tactics in basically winning Liverpool the Champions league title, what a game.

Dudek was a catalyst in Liverpool's 2005 Champions League success, performing a double save against A.C. Milan's Andriy Shevchenko at the end of extra time in the final, after Liverpool had rallied from a 3–0 deficit to tie the match 3–3. He saved from Andrea Pirlo and Shevchenko in the ensuing penalty shootout, which Liverpool won 3-2. During the shootout, he attempted to distract the Milan players with the "spaghetti legs" tactic that was used by former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar in the 1984 European Cup Final. Being European Cup winners for the fifth time, Liverpool kept the trophy and received the UEFA badge of honour, and as a tribute to Dudek's heroics, a group of Liverpool fans, the Trophy Boyz, recorded a successful novelty single called 'Du the Dudek'. He became the third Polish footballer after Zbigniew Boniek (with Juventus) and fellow goalkeeper J霩ef M造narczyk (F.C. Porto) to win the Champions' League.
