Most people here probably won't care about this, but I thought I would mention, Jan Chodkiewicz from Fechtschule Gdansk won first place in this years international longsword championship today in Gothenburg, Sweden, defeating a Belgian fencer 12 bouts to 10. It was the first year the Poles fought in this tournament and I believe 2 other Polish men and 1 Polish woman also placed in the top 4 ranks in sword and buckler, rapier, saber, and women's longsword. It was also the first year the Swedes from Göteborgs Historiska Fäktskola lost their own tournament, their champion Axel Petterson made third place this year.

These matches were fought full-contact, full speed with blunt steel weapons, wearing fencing masks and other modern sports equipment. Punches and kicks are allowed, so are throws. In fact Jan was grappled by his larger opponent in the final match and threw him with a hip-throw, winning the bout.

This is not re-enactment, it's a different phenomenon. Most of the fencers in the tournament fight based on historical European systems from some old books, but the tournament is open to anyone qualified to fight and included several people from Eastern Martial Arts backgrounds, one of whom placed second in one of the categories.

This event was recorded on video and I will post video and photos as soon as they are available, in case anyone is interested.

You've got the right activity, wrong club. Those are a couple of guys from a group in Bristol, in the UK.

These are the Polish guys who fought in this tournament (this footage is from last year though)
