Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if there is a very big rugby scene in Polska.

Would love to hear from any rugbisty about the nature and status of this sport in my homeland.

I look forward to reading your posts

I’m not Polish but as it stands they have a very slight chance of even being mentioned in the World Cup qualifying rounds net year, a great pity as I think the Polish guys could play a great game of Rugby- the Japanese can do it so I know the Poles can.

Hi welshman. I am familiar with the exploits (or lack thereof) of the Polish rugby team.

What i am actually inquiring about is the popularity of the game among Poles.

I live in Australia and am thinking of playing rugby when i move to Polska to live among my countrymen for the first time.

I am an accomplished rugby player and want to play rugby competetively.
Stupidwelsh  Dec 7, 06, 21:18    #4
I can only give my support, I think that Poland has a great future in Rugby
Kasper  Dec 7, 06, 22:42    #5
As do the Welsh and the Irish my friend.

you guys gave us wallabies a good run for our money.

Looking forward to the world cup immensely.

I reckon new zealand are going to win for sure.

there is a rugby league in poland but this discipline of sport is not popular(yet).
i think it will be once we've won something important or at least get some good place in a major tournament.look at the example of F1 racing.it wasn't popular at all before robert kubica became a regular driver in the bmw team.now people are crazy about this sport.
Kasper  Dec 10, 06, 21:22    #9
I'm not too concerned by rugby league, it's the proper version i was talking about.

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows of or is a part of the rugby scene in pl.

And by the way..... the cricket is one thing that is keeping mew on the couch with my icy cold zubrowka......interesting clash of cultures, cricket and vodka.

But back to rugby, the only thing i know of polish rugby is that awesome song by OSTR called "rugby". He seems quite keen on rugby, is the rest of Polish youth into rugby so much or is it just him?

boo hiss etc
Seriously, you blokes have got us reeling. The Gabba was a nightmare, you Aussies outclassed us. End of story.

As for the second test. I really couldn't believe it. After Collingwood and Pietersen, I really thought it was in the bag. Simply an incredible performance by the Aussies to come back. Hats off!

I just hope England can carry on at the Waca like they started in Adelaide, otherwise...
Kasper  Dec 11, 06, 20:17    #11
hahahaha, the pain of it all hey Huegel?

Best test match i've ever seen though.

As far as congratulating us, don't bother, we're used to winning the cricket now.

If only we had a shot at the world cup rugby, then i would be happy.

It is looking less and less promising for you guys to make it back to back, English rugby has died in the arse since the last world cup. It looks like New Zealand may finally get another one....although i'm hoping not, as i hate the All Blacks with a passion......goddamn cheaters.

I still would like that Poland develops a Rugby Union team- I remember when the 5 Nation’s became the 6, and let’s be honest Italy were [not very good], now they can hold there heads with respect and pride within the RU. I’d honestly love that Poland was part of that inclusive thing that involves a big fight on a field with complicated rules and discipline.

And yes NZ are frightening at the moment, but it isn’t over yet
Kasper  Dec 11, 06, 22:49    #13
Perhaps they should look into starting a second/third tier 6 nations. Countries like Spain. Romania, Portugal, Russia, Poland etc. This would do wonders for developing the game in europe.

Also, i think that countries like Poland could gain a lot of experience and knowledge by touring the premier rugby countries and playing some of the club sides. This would leave them open to experience other styles of rugby and learn from them. This is the key to the success of second/third tier rugby nations. Send them to australia/new zealand and let them learn from the Aussie and Maori styles of the game.

very good idea guys, id be all for it as a couch watcher lol, not much of a sportsmen anymore, but would be great to help out in anyway.
Stupidwelsh  Dec 12, 06, 07:45    #15
In general agreement with Kasper

The trouble is that you have to get grass roots support in Poland, from there you can grow a competitive national team from the regional teams. You can’t really do it the other way around, have a great national team that grows regional teams.

We saw that a few years ago where Wales was buying in foreign players [as long as at least their grandmother had some connection to Wales it was allowed] because of a failure of grassroots support, we had Graham Henry as well and still couldn’t make the grade. Look at New Zealand under Henry now, that’s a country with a lot of grass roots support.

When you look at the rugby season there isn’t much space for a 2nd division 6 Nations, and there‘s a distinct lack of available grounds of the required standard, but it is a good idea. It would be nice also if the richer clubs in the Home Nations offered secondments to some of the Polish players, giving them valuable training and experience that they can then take back to their clubs- and it doesn’t have to be just the Northern hemisphere, all rugby nations could be involved in that nurturing process.

There’s also the political aspect of Rugby, Poland playing well even within a European league cements the nation into the European fabric indelibly, not a bad thing when you hear and read some of the anti-Polish sentiment on the streets of Northern Europe.
Stupidwelsh  Dec 12, 06, 08:16    #16
Looking at the Union rankings the idea of a 2 tier 6 nations isn’t going to work, both Russia and Portugal are ranked much higher than Poland, to the point where it would be no match at all.

Maybe a better idea would be a sort of European Lions tour, 1 team made up of the 6 nations [so a team built from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy] vs. a team built from the 6 best Central and Eastern European countries. The 6 Nations Lions could play a few friendlies against say the top 3 teams and end with the European Lions Test Match. As that stands it would be terribly imbalanced as 5 of the 6 nations are in the top 10 rankings, and for example Poland is ranked 38 and Hungary is in the 60’s.

So good idea but it isn’t going to work is it?

I also thought of a sort of Central European League but that doesn’t work either, Hungary are going to get hammered by just about everyone based on present rankings.

Poland can’t qualify for the RWC [and most worryingly failed to qualify in the under 19], but they aren’t doing so bad in the European Nations Cup

NZ national team was preparing for some tournament in Poland a year ago or two. Nobody knew Who they were so they could prepare without any harrasment from the fans they said. I happended to see a short news segment on TV about their staying in Poland and that' how I know about it. That give you perhaps some idea how popular the sport is here.
The capital of rugby in PL has been Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot - for years! as far as I know.
I don't think it's going to pick up in popularity, rather american footbal is on rise here.

rugby clip from Gdynia:

Are there any rugby fans or players on this forum that aren't british?
MattW  Dec 25, 06, 04:06    #19
There is a second tier Six Nations guys, it has Portugal, Spain, Romania, Russia and the Czech Republic in it.

By the way, I am an Aussie going to teach English in Poland at the end of January, do you reckon I should try and introduce some kind of rugby to the kids - touch or sevens even? I am not at all Polish though, and can't speak the language so I might be in a bit of hot water.

Try pzrugby.pl or rugbyinfo.pl for information about the rugby union leagues. If you can't speak Polish then frogsco.pl, is your best bet.

Rugby is growing in popularity, there were 50+ teams in the 7's league in 2006. With all the Poles going to the UK and Ireland it can only get better. The 6 nations will be shown on Polish TV this year, so hopefully this might give the sport some publicity.

The biggest problem with rugby in Poland is the image, it was played by the thugs attached to football teams initially. This has changed over the years but as a consequence of its history it does not attract sponsorship, who wants to be associated with that. As is usual in Poland the governing body does more harm than good and frankly does not do enough to promote the sport to a wider audience. Without this wider audience there will be no money.

I think you will see more and more Polish rugby players going abroad to improve, which may be good for the national team but not the league.

Any more questions, just ask.

Any idea which Polish TV channel is showing the 6 Nations? I'm currently based in Warsaw and none of the myriad sport channels in my cable package seem to have it, which is an unpleasant surprise -- they seem to show nothing but back-to-back boxing and volleyball........

Don't know which channels are showing the rugby. I always managed to see them at Champions Sports Bar at the Marriott even when they were on the BBc and not Sky/Eurosport. Might be worthwhile popping in for a (very expensive) beer and asking them what channels it's on
jwf  Feb 23, 07, 07:50    #23
Thanks.

Frogs & Co tole me that they watch it in Jimmy Bradley's Irish Bar (Sienna 39) or at Bar Below (Marszalkowska 64). Both places have BBC and Sky. Trouble is, I've been feeling like a couch potato over recent days so was hoping to watch this Saturday's matches from the comfort of my sofa. ;-)

As far as I know Arka Gdynia are the POlish champions from 2006. But I would not dismiss RL Kasper as the Estonians, Lithuanians, Russians, Czechs, Germans, Dutch and Austrians are all taking up league with gusto. You may well want to have a go at promoting both codes as the two can help each other.

rafik, do you mean Rugby League as a sport, is so I am interested in knowing where that's playes. Or do you mean a Rugby Union League?
