Gollob secures world speedway title

Tomasz Gollob won the Italian Speedway Grand Prix in Terenzano, Saturday, which also crowns him Speedway World Champion.



Gollob is the first Pole to hold a speedway gold medal since Jerzy Szczakiel in 1973. Previously Gollob had won two silver and four bronze medals in the Speedway Grand Prix, and has been Poland’s speedway champion eight times.



“It was a fantastic evening and a great day for me,” Gollob told journalists after winning the final race adding “I still can’t believe I won the title!”.



Born on 11 April 1971, Gollob has been a top speedway rider for over ten years, but never managed to win the Grand Prix since its founding in 1995. The closest he got was in 1999, but in the end lost out to Swede Tony Rickardsson. (jb)

The Poles are the best at this now. Gollob, Holta, Hampel, etc.

I am suprised it took him so long to win this title...he has always been a great rider...
