I've only heard of Lato but I know how good Boniek was and it's hard to imagine a Polish player being much better than him. Boniek was silky!

Lato or Boniek?

No Jerzy Gorgon or Andziej Szarmach.

Difficult answer:
Boniek: made a hattrick with Belgium (3 goals in one half). Effect 3rd place in Spain '82
earlier 2 goals with Mexico and 5-6 place in Argentina '78

Lato: shot one with Brazil (very important and winning one). I can recall this action: he made it alone from the half of playground and shot from outside of penalty area. Effect: 3rd place in Munich '74; also 2 goals in Argentina '78

But we can't forget Deyna with his killing shot with Italy in Munich '74 (he broke his shoe) the very upper gate window and he was the captain.

Szarmach on the other hand was a best head-shooter.

And of course Lubański: 48 goals in national team (Polish best); gold medal in Olympics '72, goal in WC preliminaries 2:0 with England in 1974 in Chorzów.

And later Dark ages.

But returning to your exact question:
I vote Boniek for his later professional career in European teams
and Lato as the best national teamer. ;-)

Both Lato and Boniek relied on their pace, but I would probably say that Boniek was the more skillful of the two;

You are probably correct in that Boniek played for greater club teams such as Juventus and Roma, winning a Cup Winners Cup, European Super Cup and also a European Cup if memory serves me correctly;

Lato probably achieved more playing for the Polish national side than Boniek. Lato represented Poland in three World Cups, 1974, 1978 and 1982 where Poland gained third place in '74 and '82, and Lato was awarded the Golden Boot at the '74 tournament scoring 7 goals - only Polish player ever to achieve this honour. Lato is also the most capped Polish player with 104 caps , and I believe he is the second highest scorer for the national team after Lubanski.
Lato also won Gold and Silver for Poland at 1972 and 1976 Olympics respectively.

If I had to choose one of these players to be playing in our national team now, as they did when at the peak of their career, then I'd probably go for Boniek.
It would be great if Poland had players of their quality in the squad today :o)

marqoz:

head-shooter ??? :o) not a term commonly used ; you mean that he was the best header of a ball :o)

It's a great shame that Lubanski was injured and could not take part in the '74 World Cup in Germany - he is definitely viewed as one of Poland's greatest players.

It will be interesting to see what players will make it for Euro 2012, and whether we will have a team to be proud of at the Championships. No competitive games before Euro 2012, which will make it quite difficult to assess how the teams performs in 'real' matches.

Yup ;-) Thanks for your vigilance. I didn't mean a hitman specialization.
As far as 2012 is concerned, I'm an open-minded pessimist. I'm open for any comforting news but still sad.

Actually it was a 1-1 draw at Wembley, but the result meant that Poland qualified for the World Cup in Germany at England's expense. I remember that night very well, one of the most memorable games I have ever attended.

In those days it was a 3 team qualifying group, Poland, England and Wales.

Lato or Boniek?

Neither. When it comes to pure talent and skill then, in my opinion,
Poland's best player of all time was Roman Kosecki (Legia Warsaw,
Galatasaray, Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, FC Nantes, Montpellier,
Chicago Fire).

Kosecki

Roman Kosecki

The guy was an outstanding forward - fast, brave and always full of fighting
spirit. If he had been born 10 years earlier he would have made a bigger mark
on Polish football than Boniek and would have been a star of three World Cups
with Poland. Unfortunately, his time in the national team was a period of defeats
and humiliations (but still he managed to score 19 goals in 69 games for Polish NT).

Here's his memorable game against Barcelona (two goals and an assist) from '93-'94
season. At half time Atletico was losing 0:3 but eventually won the game thanks to
Kosecki's epic performance. 60 thousand people at Estadio Vicente Calderón were
standing there and still shouting "Polonia, Polonia!" 10 minutes after the final whistle.

kosecki was an unbelivable stricker , but Jan Urban was more famous than him in spain and he had more class .

they are different player , kosecki a killer and urban a brain

Yes - Urban was a great striker too. The only Pole to score hat-trick against
Real Madrid on Estadio Bernabéu. As you said - they were different types of
players, but having watched them both in their clubs and for Polish NT I'd say
that Kosecki was on overall a better player than Urban.

Currently they went in different directions too - Urban stayed in football, he's
a coach of Legia Warsaw and Kosecki became a politician, he's a member of
Polish parliament with Civic Platform.

espana:

A very famous Polish football journalist (recently passed away) Janusz Atlas
was at the game and wrote an article for the "Piłka Nożna" weekly football
magazine. He was a class journalist - I wouldn't accuse him of lying.

I don't know other two, but Kosecki was playing in Galatasaray in my childhood and it was the years I chose to support Galatasaray. It's maybe still the first name many people will remember when you ask them about Poland in Turkey.

In 1995, when the Barcelona basketball team won the Spanish League in Malaga, a placard appeared in the hall, reading "POLACOS AL HORNO CREMATORIO" ("Poles to the crematorium").

Lovely.

I think I will add Barcelona to the list of my favourite teams :-)
Thank you for telling me this, Espana - from today in my heart there are
three teams - Legia Warsaw, Celtic Glasgow and FC Barcelona.

How do you say "FC Barcelona - my new love" in Spanish?

I was a young man when you were a child mephias.

I was a child when Lato was playing ( 1974 World Cup is not it ? )

Poland football was amazing at that times.

Meanwhile, the first name Turks will remember is obviously Dobrowski :)

Kosecki was a very good player.

Roman Kosecki has also set up a Football School for kids called Kosa Konstancin.

Born in Poland. Second highest World Cup goalscorer of all time.

The fat Ronaldo is the record holder.
