a link to this story was posted earlier in the week but hardly seemed to be touched upon

i downloaded it and watched it tonight - it was on BBC4 a couple of days ago

has anyone else seen it?

Six years ago, a tip-off to a national newspaper warned of “skin-hunting”, whereby medical professionals found there was more money to be made from dead patients than live ones.

With the government offering $1,000 in funeral subsidies to grieving families, what started as a simple scam involving duping relatives into signing the money away took a more sinister turn when doctors, nurses and paramedics began actively hastening their patients’ demise.

The authorities are examining 70 cases of attempted murder, although it’s feared that after 10 years of skin-hunting, some 50,000 people may have fallen victim to its exponents.

I hope some people are'nt waiting to see how they can defend it.
Unless theres DNA evidence and crystal clear CCTV footage of all 50,000 being killed then I'm guessing that these people will be seen to be innocent. Or is that only the case if it happened in the UK?

Well, it could happen especially if you choose 12 people as the jury from the city that the ambulance staff live in and who will be following the local press at their homes simultanously to the case in the court claiming they are innocent and the judge, who has to help the jury to make the right choices and interpretation will be sure of innocence of them from the very beginning and will accept the majority verdict...

I watched the programme last night and it was shocking. What seems to be the most surprising is how minor a story it was in Poland considering we're talking about the murder of thousands of people.
The main (alledged) mastermind behind it all is a bigwig in Lodz who has recently been re elected to the local government and enjoys the support of the local Catholic church as he passes them bribes so that they filter the bereaved to his funeral parlour. It seems this wasnt enough for him and he bribed doctors, paramedics and hospital staff to murder patients either directly or through delaying their treatment so that he could have increased custom. People just werent dying fast enough for him to make a big enough profit.

it seems to have been quietly ignored, swept quickly under the carpet in the hope that nobody will notice excatly what happened or the depths to which corrunption and endemic greed permeate all levels of society

truely shocking, to the extent that friends who have watched the documentary dont really know how to respond to it - disbelief

Amazing that something like this can go on in a civilised country, really makes you think how corrupt the hierarchy of Poland are, government officials & even prosecutors of the courts. I shall ensure that all my friends see this program, Why hasn't this been Big News within the Polish Media???? Mass Murder is not a big enough story?

Yeah even the Wests and Shipman got quite a bit of coverage and they didn't murder half as many :) (sorry couldnt resist that) it is quite strange that its never been mentioned before - I only found out when I went to my parents for dinner last week, quite a shocking thing by any standards.

There have been trials and appeals. I now live in the UK. I do not read Polish papers daily. But if you are really interested, type "³owcy skór" into Google and check the top link - it has a recapitulation of the whole story, article by article (in Polish).
I just wanted to say that people claiming on the forum that nobody in Poland is interested in this case etc. are not right. When this first came to light, the shock and outrage were enormous. It just isn't humanly possible to keep up the same level of outrage for six years in a row, though.
Why hadn't the BBC picked up on this earlier?

good question - the report was made by a young polish woman and probably wasnt comissioned directly by the beeb... it can take some time for reports to be made and longer to have them aired on tv... but the truth is i just dont know

It is years old case. 50 thousand ? The whole health care would have to be involved. There were suspicions in several dozen of cases and 6 or 8 were proven. I think 2 got life in prison for killing and a few others a few years for taking bribs. How wasn't It a big story ? It had been a huge one for weeks. Government and the Church involved ?? What the hell ? And Prince Charls was raping and killing children in Rwanda... Do they say these BS in that "documentary" ?

i really dont think charlie was raping little children in rwanda... at least there is no dna or cctv evidence supporting this claim

Apart from that, someone mentioned 50 000 dead, which would be like killing off a small town - I've only come across 5 000 victims (which is quite enough), and 20 000 people influenced by the murders, like family members and such.

Can someone please explain to me really fast what is the story about or give me some links to read about it? Were there really 50,000 people murdered? Isn't that impossible, that would be the biggest mass murder in the history, wouldn't it? Is there a link somewhere with a video I could download in the USA since the BBC one does not work here?

For several guys working in two ambulance teams this seems quite an achievement. If they really managed to kill off 50 000 - as the BBC claims - the funeral parlours would not be able to cope with the turnover! Remember that as a rule, people are buried rather than cremated in Poland. Cemetery space is restricted, so £ód¼ would soon run out of land and would have to plan for a huge graveyard area increase (we are talking a small town dead and buried within 10 years).
Somehow I think this bit is a poor translation of the statement that approx. 20 000 were influenced by the murders - this is what I read somewhere in one of the reports.
5 000 dead sounds shocking. 50 000 dead sounds like "shock-value" reporting.

No... Proven was no more than 10, in reality within years that could be several times more but nowhere even close to thousands.
