hello;

I 'm going to Wroclaw in September, ( as an erasmus student ) and I will live in the student accomodation of the uni. I think it is the same place as you live. But why do you leave it ( just after 15 days ! ). Not comfortable ? seedy ? too small ? too loud ? or something else ?
Can you describe the rooms ? the "ambiance" of the dormitory ? Are there a lot of stranger ? Where is it situated ( center, near to the uni ?)? ...

Thank you

Marek

Hi Marek,

Im leaving because my girlfriend is coming over to stay the whole summer with me, and starting from 10th of July I will have a roommate, and you know, I find we won't be comfortable as a couple living with another guy in the same room!

The word that best defines the student residences is CHEAP. You can't beat the prices, for one bed you pay 192 zlotych (50 euros) monthly.

These are the rest of the characteristics, probably not the best, but remember is very cheap!

First of all, you share room, you canīt live alone. You will have 1 or 2 roommates, and the whole room is about 16 square meters.

Second, it is a building with 10 stories, and each story have like 18 rooms (meaning around 50 persons per story), and there is one kitchen for all of you. The kitchen is basically 2 sinks to wash dishes and two old gas heaters for cooking, and one table!
Also there is only 1 washing machine per story which your room is allowed to use one day per week.

Third, ambient it's ok, not dangerous, friendly among erasmus people (because I live in the same story as all the erasmus), but also you should follow some security measures like closing your room every time you're somewhere else, to avoid being robbed (you never know when can this happen!)

Fourth, yes, it is loud. You can hear noises from the rooms next to yours, from the bathroom (which you share with another 3 rooms, meaning 12 people), from the hall and even from outside. And if you add that people usually listen music loud or party and drink in the halls, well, its not the best place for sleeping/studying.

Fifth, it is near to the uni, just 10 minutes walking or 2 tram stops. And next to this building there are 5 other buildings of the same kind. Meaning that with good weather everyone is in the garden making grills.

Sixth, thing that annoys me the most, in every room there is a loudspeaker, through which the administrator speaks to the WHOLE building WHENEVER they want. Just imagine it is 1am, you are almost sleeping in your bed, and suddenly one voice in polish starts giving some announcement (which in my case I never understand because can't understand polish!). VERY ANNOYING!

Hope it gives you a better idea of your next home! Remember, its the cheapest around!

I think the negatives outweigh the cheapness in the thread above. Paying a little bit more for privacy is worth it. Sounds like a small village crambed into a 10 level breeze block.

Thank you for all this details !

Have you found a flat in the city centre ? If yes, was it difficult ? And what are the prices (give me an average if you can )
Sorry if I'm annoying you with all my questions, but I'm a little anxious about my new future life !

Marek

ps: Where do you come from ?

You're welcome!

Haven't found anything yet, still looking for and also waiting what's gonna happen with my actual room because in case the new roommate don't show up I will probably stay, anyways I'm gonna be here only 10 more weeks, I hope I can survive the student residence :)

The thing is man, that I came here to work, and such amount of noise is not the best atmosphere for someone that must wake up at 7am everyday.

I come from Mexico, and you?

I come from France.
I guess you are fluent in english, but can you tell me if most of the students ( poles and erasmus ) are fluent or just have basic knowledge ( like me ) to communicate ? And in your dormitory, what is the main language spoken, english or polish ? I tell you this questions, cos I would like to know if I will really improve my english level or not during my stay in Poland. I don't know if I will be mostly surronding by international or poles students.

It's funny you come from Mexico, because I have some friends who are going to Mexico to study next academic year, including my girlfriend, so I have some interest about this country, and I hope I could visited it soon !

Thank you

Marek

I think you will need to improve your english. Among Erasmus student they're always speaking in english, unless there are only spanishes and they start speaking only spanish (I say so because I've met like 10 erasmus students from Spain, too many!)

Poles main foreign language is english, so if you don't speak polish, well then english is your only option. In the building they all speak polish, only in my story where all the erasmus live, mostly english is spoken. Anyhow, I have met a couple of polish students that can't speak english, but this is not the common case. The manager of the residence doesn't speak english, only polish, so you will need someone to translate for you, but people here are kind to do so (some of them just want an excuse to practice their english skills).

Well, I guess your girlfriend is gonna have lots of fun man, Mexico is such a big country with many many different destinations: lots of beaches, deserts, mountains, volcanos, smalls towns, huge towns, forests, jungles, and I'm gonna stop now before I take a flight back there!

Good luck in your plans for Poland!
