what is a Swiadectwo Uwolnienia ?

Hi folks

I recently found in a forgotten bundle of my grandmother's old papers, an administrative document dated 1911. If part of my family came from Galicia, the polish language is long gone in the family. Due to the antispam regulation of the forum I cannot upload a link to an image.

It is a "Swiadectwo Uwolnienia". Anybody knows what it is about ?

I can't translate it, but it's, according to some law from 1895, a certificate that the girl attended the necessary school courses and showed very good progress in learning, therefore she is released from compulsory schooling because she fulfilled what was requiered by that law.

and the title Świadectwo Uwolnienia means something like "Release Certificate".

True. The most important information about the girl - she was Jewish, born on 16th March 1895 and the school was Tyczyn.

That she was Jewish I know :). As I said, she is my grandmother. She was born in Tyczyn. Thru the papers I also found the names of two of her own grand-parents named Beck, Jews from another small town in Galicia.

Hello. I have no idea what that means but I was wondering if you were researching the Ulkowski surname in Poland? My grandfather is from Czarne or Czarna and I have been hitting a lot of brick walls. I know his father died in Poland and I am trying to find someone interested in the same surname.

This paper claims your mother learned very well (possibly religious lessons) and because of that she was "released" from futher learning with a grade of "5" (maximal grade possible)

but.. wtf is galicia I really don't know ;) It's something historical I suppose...

it's a historical region in Spain, just north of Portugal (La Coruna, Vigo - Poland played there during World Cup 1982, I can still remember)

but Galicja was the region of south-eastern Poland (sometimes referred to as Galicja i Lodomeria), controlled by Austro-Hungarian Empire after the 18th century partitions of Poland (today's Małopolska - with Kraków, Tarnów - and Podkarpacie - Rzeszów, Przemyśl - plus Lwów (Lviv) and other parts of today's eastern Ukraine, that before the partitions belonged to Poland)
