Taking a Camper (Motor-home) to Poland

We hope to travel one day, maybe even next year (2009), to Poland using a camper we intend to buy. It will be a huge vehicle as we have five children.

We'll be concentrating on the Poznan area but would also like to visit Warsaw, too, and would like to know if we might encounter any driving problems or restrictions with such a large camper.

Also, if anyone has advice on good campsites please let me know.

I would suggest getting a map (a paper one or for GPS) with bridge/underpass heights, it shouldn't be a problem on the main roads. But it all depends on what you're planning to visit (some places might not be directly accessible for tall vehicles). If it's a vehicle above 7.5 metric tons I'd check if the "truckless sundays" apply.

get it well insured, and don't park in one place for too long, the wheels might wonder off !

Good advice. We have a pretty good Sat Nav, a Garmin which also covers Poland.

I hope we don't lose our wheels!

a couple of pieces of potentially useless information (from the north of the country)
- any campsites we've seen charge separately for everything carried/driven onto the site - x zloty extra per child, per adult, per dog ... be aware.
- were you planning on parking outsite of campsites? we tried this and found it difficult to find somewhere to stop (without the feeling we'd be moved on for illegal parking) - no convenient overnight stopping places like you might find in the UK (and no WalMarts for those familiar with their policy in the US :) ) And then there's always the matter of safety ...
- these people managed, mind ;)

Thank you cjj for that advice and the link, which shows it can be done.

We hope to do a little "wild camping" but not an awful lot, especially in view of some of the scare stories we've heard. etc..

Last year we had an incredible time in Southern France without any trouble; France is great because of all the free campsite you can stay in!

Super idea Paddy, I did this as a discussion with my advanced group. There is so much untapped potential in Poland. The Poles love BBQ's, a major attraction for campers. Seriously, explore ur options fully, they are plentiful and u'll have a ball. Good luck mate

Thank you Seanus for that very encouraging post!

We are looking forward to our impending trip with pleasurable anticipation; we are an outdoor type of family so really looking forward to exploring the Wilds of Poland.
