"Poland's Minister of Justice Ziobro announced yesterday that he is introducing a bill that will have the cars of people who are found driving cars in Poland when they have more than the legal limit of alcohol in their system. The proposed law will be such that the courts can even take a car completely from the owner."

The whole article here

It's a good idea, or is it? I don't think this law would overpower the law of private property. But in Poland everything's possible I guess.

I've heard they could take the care even if you've just borrowed it from someone else. That would be a little bit too much ;}

Well, the law of private property is very big in Poland, but when we are talking about other people's safety, I don't think the law of private proberty have much to say..

I know the safety is much important - but I can see some danger here. If this law passed, the government could go a litthe further and take the money in the form of a car/house/etc for each act of illegal activity. Jails would not be needed then ;).

I don't kow that much about Poland other than what I have learned from my exchange student but I would have to think that if set with limits of the property -car, motor bike,- being taken then I think yes! if it is a illegal activity drunk driving the person will think is it worth it? I have heard that cars and the like are a bit more $ than here so if it was a deterent what is the hold up? like I said I don't know much but an trying to learn more...just my thoughts

It might be fair -- but first they (the government) would have to prove its serious and just -- buy taking away a car from drunk senators and government officials... smile

I haven`t heard about it - but if it`s true - it`s a very good idea, cose it is going make people think twice before getting into a car after a few drinks.

btw. Though private property, forms the, so to say, the core of our Constitution - it is possible that during a war or martial law - your cars (especially SUVs) might be confiscated for defense pourpouses by the military - so confiscating a car for driving after a few drinks is not such a strange idea.

I'm from texas but both my parents are polish so I hear their opinions too.
Here the police can confiscate your car if you drive drunk, they inpound it and you can buy it back after a few days for a couple hundred dollars.
I think a one time mistake can be made by many, but taking away the car with no possibility of a buyback?...seems a little too harsh.
If they keep data, perhaps this would be a good idea for repeat offenders of 2+ dui's (driving under the influence).
My parents definitly think its a good idea for even first time offenders.

all countrys should do it plus give em an huge fine and make them retake their driving test before they can buy another car or even drive one, if i ever found some1 drink driving id kick crap out em then report to old bill, stuff lettin em buy it bk like ace says they do in states just take it of em sell/scrap it use any revenue from sales to promote drinkdriving campaign or use it for hospitals ya know that big place full of docs & nurses who look after the VICTIMS of drink driving
