What Do the Poles Think about the Abolition of the Death Penalty?

'The life of david gale' is a great story RE why there should be no death penalty.
We got rid of it in Ireland not so long ago (it was never used BUT it was a protection of our UNARMED police, that to kill a member of the police force could incur the death penalty)

I thought it should have remained as a proctective barrier to our 'Gardai' (police) as it was not mandatory BUT served as a warning - esp today as gun crimes are on the rise again in Ireland.

Was it used in Poland over the last 17 years?

Anybody realise that the death penalty attracts certain weirdo's like carbombers, insane patients and other sicko's who actually want to die? For them the only punishment is to make them live. If you want to prevent them from eating on your back ( the tax you pay, ) make them work in prison. You like America? Whether you like it or not, inmates in american prisons sometimes do forced labour. But death penalty in the US does not prevent the prisons from becoming bigger and bigger and fuller and fuller, all eating from the taxes poor workers pay. Not to speak of the horrors caused by dubious judgments and failing juries.
Borrow the best ideas from all over the world, not the worst.

death penalty is what distinguishes a civilised nation from an uncivilised one... along with tolorance for minorities...

I would just like to put this out there (and forgive me if it's been said, I didn't read through the entire post), but in post #4 that Matyjasz wrote, the U.S. has the largest numbers listed. We have had the death penalty for a long time. Where is the deterent if our number of violent crimes keeps increasing every year..... and the numbers are well over the numbers in Poland.

I think death penalty is not a bad thing, if some people have killed several people why should they still alive ? if they 'id dead at least, we will be sure they wouldn't murdered other people !

Dead people can't launch appeals to clear their names after they were wrongfully convicted.

Um, yeah..... has anyone included that little variable in the U.S, when doing this crime reporting study. The United States is not a Homogenious society. Therefore we have a different type of crime. The crime in Poland, is Polish on Polish, not black on white, hispanic on black, asian on cuban, etc.......... This makes a dramatic difference in crime statistics.

hmmm...well look at incidents such as the Texas church shoot-out, the Virginia Highschool shootout ect.
The unifying factor amongst all these tragedies is the availability of firearms, especially semi-automatic handguns, which are the weapons of choice for rampage and workplace shooters.

The public and guns seems to create more problems, more unnessesary deaths.

As to using guns to fight crime...Things just seem to get worse when people take crime into their own hands.

I do understand the other side. I live in South Africa where crime is a serious problem and a life sentence in prison is not enough. The prisons are full and rapists and murderers walk free after two weeks - if they are caught.

My friends mother was beaten up last week, ended up with 9 stitches in her head, they tied her up with her bra and repeatedly kicked her. The wanted to sodomize her but luckely it was taking too long to get her jeans off. Their neighbor however, was raped 3 weeks before, infront of her two tied up kids. These people were dam lucky. Why? you might ask? Because they are still ALIVE. The suspects are still at large and will probably be...forever. With such a long waiting list of suspects, incidents, rapes, the police simple cant get to it all.
So we'v had incidents where the community has struck back. In the black communities, when a rapist, murderer or theif is let out of prison, or simply caught in the act before the police comes (it can take the police a few days to get to the crime scene, this is often too late) the community work togeather and well, kill the criminal, usually by stoning him or using garden tools to kill him. This has, to a certain extent helped crime in black townships and communities. But by a very tiny pecentage. Is this right? I dont know, I have mixed feelings about it.

No, i'd like to see him defeated, in a hectic prison, along with other rapist and murderers, on a life sentence. And prison isnt just sitting doing nothing. Its managing with other criminals. Many people contract AIDS in prison becuse they are raped...guys on guys. Prisoners are stabbed, tortured, beaten up, burned, by other prisoners. I'd rather watch him (Hitler/murderers etc) suffer in prison for the rest of their lives, or in solitary confinement - in prison, then just die off.

Besides, whats waiting for them after their long suffering in prison is even worse when God judges them. Let them await for death in fear!! Let them wait for a loooong time.

hmmm...I have not heard about racist crimes as much. Most of the crimes I hear on the news are ones commitied by whites on whites. White men on white baby girls, and white women on white women as the latest news report said - something about the one chick killing the other pregnant one.

Some of you claim that this is EU demand to abolish death penalty. This is not true, please show proper paragraph if you would insist that such law exist. You confuse organizations, this is The Council of Europe (47 member countries, among them Russia and Azerbaijan) that has such regulation.

It would be much better if gun ownership was reinstainted and good citizens would be allowed to defend themselves and their families as need arises. If a criminal would know that his 'victim' may have a consealed weapon and that he could be shot, he would think twice about taking such chances. Isn't it a much better idea? After all, the criminals always have access to illigal arms & do not think twice to take your life away, should not we even out our chances and let them have the taste of their own behavior?

I believe in the right to pre-emptively shoot people who might habour criminal ideas, even if they havent had these ideas yet but might have them at some point in the future. Experience has shown us that good people can sometimes become bad people. It is better to shoot them pre-emptively now, than take the risk that they might turn into bad people at some point in the unforeseeable future. This is your right and you re doing it to protect your family.

I'll be sure to sniper yo ass pre-emptively then when I hunt u down
